Linux on IBM z Adoption Grows

I

don't consider myself to be an early adopter of
technology, but I'm no Luddite either. I tend to wait
until I have a good reason to try something new. Once
I do, I find myriad uses for it. For instance, one of the
two video streaming services I subscribe to allows me
to download content to my tablet so I can watch movies or TV shows.
This makes my thrice weekly 80-minute roundtrip bus ride much more
palatable. The other offers tons of content that I can safely let my
12-year-old watch.
Similarly, most z Systems* clients don't seem to jump on the
bandwagon the minute a new technology comes along. Rather, they wait
to let it mature and get the kinks worked out. Such was the case when
IBM introduced Linux* on mainframe 16 years ago. Today, the OS seems
to have reached that critical mass where many clients are now deploying
it in production workloads. In fact, it's now the OS of choice for nearly
50 percent of mainframe clients, according to Martin Schwidefsky, Linux
on z Systems development, IBM Germany Research and Development.
Read more about the ways clients are using Linux in the cover story of
this e-book (page 10).
In addition to our interview with Schwidefsky, we also aggregated
some of our latest Linux content, all in one handy e-book. If you have any
suggestions for future Linux topics, drop me a line; I'd love to hear from you.
