Opportunity
Why more z Systems customers are running Linux

O

ver the past 16 years,
Linux* has gone from
edge of network to
the OS of choice for nearly 50
percent of z Systems* clients. The
combination of its open-source
flexibility and IBM's reliable
mainframe hardware opens up
exciting possibilities for users.
To find out how Linux has
evolved in the z Systems community, IBM Systems Magazine sat
down with Martin Schwidefsky,
Linux on z Systems development, IBM Germany Research
& Development.
IBM Systems Magazine (ISM):
Almost 50 percent of z Systems
clients have Linux installed on their
systems as of 2Q 2016. What is
driving this demand?
Martin Schwidefsky (MS): Linux is
the most popular OS in data centers around the world. The combination of Linux and z Systems
gives you a high-end, highly
reliable UNIX* platform. You get
the flexibility of UNIX, the ease
of software porting and access
to a wide range of open-source
programs you can recompile
and use. Clients can also utilize

the virtualization capabilities
of z Systems.
ISM: Of those 50 percent, are most
clients using Linux to run enterprise
applications, or is it still mainly
edge-of-network use?
MS: Edge of network is where
our Linux journey started in
2000. Linux filled the gaps in our
traditional OS, but our clients
realized they could do more with
it. Today, our clients are running
their critical applications on
Linux on z Systems. We have
clients doing payments, payroll,
mobile banking, real-time
analytics and data warehousing.
ISM: What are multithreading (MT)
and simultaneous multithreading
(SMT), and how do they help
workloads?
MS: MT and SMT are pretty much
the same thing. The z Systems
architecture calls it MT, while
the rest of the industry calls it
SMT. With MT, multiple tasks are
run on a single core at the same
time. Whenever one of the tasks
needs to wait for something,
such as fetching a cache line
from memory, the other task

Takeaway
➜ Nearly 50 percent of z Systems
clients are using Linux.
➜ The OS has evolved from
hosting edge-of-network apps
to critical applications including
payments, payroll, mobile
banking, real-time analytics and
data warehousing.
➜ The three Linux distributors-
SUSE, Red Hat and Ubuntu-
augment the core elements that
are developed by IBM.
