STORAGE

Tape storage is prized for its
longevity and low cost. Today, virtual
tape, where data is stored on disk
drives in tape format, is becoming
a preferred storage medium for
many enterprise IT shops. Virtual
tape technology combines flash,

tape and software-defined storage.
Virtual tape can be stored on another
storage device or in the cloud.
Virtual tape is easy to manage as
it uses the same format as physical
tape. It's portable and uses electronic
methods to move data. It's scalable
as clusters can be added as needed.
Virtual tape can be used as part of any
enterprise's disaster recovery plan.
"The use of virtual tape storage
allows businesses to benefit from
virtualization of physical tape and
achieve their goals of solid, longterm data retention at a lower cost,"
according to Patrick Stanard, a
mainframe integration architect for
IBM Global Technology Services.
Any organization considering
using virtual tape will want to create
a strategy for its use. When creating
a strategy, IT needs to address the
projected budget for the virtual
tape project, who will support it,
the timing of the backup window,

Allocation Control Center

DLm and zVT Control Center

Easy/Exit

Allocation Control Center is a policybased standards enforcement system
providing automatic control and
placement of SMS and non-SMS disk
and tape datasets of all types.

DLM and z/VT Control Center facilitates
setup and operation of EMC and Optica
Technology's virtual tape systems. It
provides allocation control without
using SMS MTL and efficient tape
migration.

Easy/Exit (EXT) is an assembler exit
replacement and trace facility for all
your existing and new exits. It provides
an easy-to-use policy-based control
language for z/OS* IEFxxx, DFSMShsm,
TSO, FTP and many other exits. EXT
allows installations to take advantage of
the hidden functionality available in
z/OS and DFSMShsm without the
need for complex, hard-to-maintain
assembler language exit routines.

scalability and performance.
IBM Spectrum Scale allows
clients to manage data at scale
while handling multiple storage
environments and data centers. It
gives storage administrators the
flexibility to use disk, tape, flash and
cloud storage as a unified system.
Admins can tier storage to cloud or
tape, thereby lowering costs. The
system is also location independent,
allowing for the ability to read and
write data from anywhere ("HighPerformance Storage for z14 and
LinuxONE Servers," bit.ly/2Oyuw4S).

Interest Grows in Virtual Tape

existing investments in virtual tape,
acceptable data loss and the ROI.
Because virtual tape is tape
format written to disk, virtual tape
performance can be checked by
using DASD measurements. It's also
important to make sure the host
processes are performing well and
that any interfaces between the
host and virtual tape are working
correctly.
The banking and manufacturing
industries are heavy users of
virtual tape. For example, a large
manufacturer turned to virtual
tape to replace its physical tape
infrastructure. The company
gained several benefits including
eliminating worries about the
old physical tape environment,
ability to stay within budget, better
backup times and the reduction of
physical tape handling and storage
costs ("A Virtual Tape Primer," bit.
