payloads are used. Developers
take the JSON payload and
advance to the next step in their
application. JSON uses a named
paired format and is lighter
weight, but similar to XML.
DBAs don't need to understand JSON, rather they deal
with the source, in this case
executing one of the following Db2 SQL types: CALL (for
stored procedures), SELECT,
INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE,
TRUNCATE or WITH. Any type
of stored procedure can be
called. SQL executions are
stateless, meaning that the
result set returned is all that
is used. Opening a cursor,
retrieving data and then
moving to the next set of data
isn't allowed. Native REST
works with all of the various
Db2 base SQL types including
BLOB, CLOB and XML.

Using Db2 REST
Services
Db2 REST Services uses direct
connections to the Db2 for z/OS
DDF address space, as opposed to
JDBC/object database connectivity or other types of connections.
Simplified connectivity means
there's no need for Db2 drivers,
a Db2 Connect gateway or a Db2
Connect license.
DDF has one listener listening
for open socket requests. Once
a socket is received, a database
access thread (DBAT) is created
and the first message is received.
If the first message is Distributed
Relational Database Architecture
(DRDA), then a DRDA DBAT is
allocated. If the first message is
HTTP, a REST DBAT is allocated.
For pooled DBATs, the next allocation uses previous DRDA or REST,
they both reside in one common
pool. With native REST, the HTTP/
HTTPS URL includes the LPAR
location name and Db2 TCP/IP
port thereby identifying the Db2

subsystem, member or data sharing DVIPA.
Native REST is relatively straightforward, allowing
you to execute functions such as create or drop a
service. A web browser with the REST client plugin is
required, alternatively executed with the TSO batch
interface IKJEFT01 when PTFs UI51795 (Db2 V11) or
UI51748 (Db2 V12) are applied. Another interface is

IBM Data Studio V4.1.2 or V4.1.3,
which require SSL, therefore
the Db2 secure port must be
operational. Data Studio doesn't
support the following Db2 REST
service create features: package BIND options nor package

GDPR is here do YOUR backup & recovery
strategies stack up?
Wednesday, May 16 | 1 ET / 12 CT
The General Data Protection Regulation
(GDPR) goes into effect May 2018
and has implications for companies
worldwide. GDPR increases privacy
for individuals and gives authorities
greater power to take action with tough
penalties and fines of up to 4% of
annual global revenue or ¤20 million
whichever is greater, and it applies to
all companies processing data of EU
residents.
Our experts will help you stay ahead of
the curve and ahead of auditors when
it comes to GDPR. Find out how BMC's
Recovery Solutions for Db2 and IMS
support the required recovery aspects
of GDPR.
