TECH CORNER

Made for MOBILE
Engage IBM Db2 V12 for mobile with z/OS Distributed Data Facility or z/OS Connect

W

e're in the middle of a data and resource explosion, with mobile (e.g.,
tablets, phones and smart watches) playing a big role in it. In my daily
routine, I use my mobile device in many ways-scouting out the cheapest
gas price; checking weather and traffic; messaging my family, friends and clients;
and, yes, even to call people.

John Iczkovits
is a senior IT
specialist with
IBM Advanced
Technical Support.
He provides
Db2 for z/OS
technical support
and consulting
services. His areas
of expertise include
Db2 data sharing,
performance and
availability.

When I joined IBM 20 years
ago, it was with an understanding
that the position required travel.
I was provided with a credit card,
calling card, pager and the number for the travel agency. Flying
to a client involved calling the
travel agent to book my flights,
select my seats and book my
hotel. Boarding passes were either
mailed or special delivered to me,
or I received them at the airport
after waiting in line.
With the mobile era, I use my
phone to book my own flights and
select my seats, and my boarding
pass is right on my phone. I book
my hotel with a preselected room,
using my phone as the room key,
and get detailed directions along
with traffic alerts to my destination. The day before I fly home,
my mobile device receives an alert
about weather and how it impacts
my travels. If necessary, the
airline can rebook me and assign
flights and seats-all viewed on
my phone.

Db2 V12 Developed
for Mobile
Mobile devices are useful in
many ways. IBM Db2* V12 for
z/OS* is ready for cloud and
mobile. It was developed to handle the enormous amount of data
and extreme sizes required for
mobile applications.

Db2 for z/OS Distributed
Data Facility (DDF) has been
enhanced to include execution
of REST requests through HTTP/
HTTPS with JSON payloads.
Native REST is enabled for Db2
V11 new function mode and
Db2 12 following informational
APAR II14827 along with the
following APARs:
* Db2 11 New Function Mode

Executing mobile transactions
on Db2 for z/OS has many
advantages:
*

The execution is run entirely
on the mainframe-this
includes when running native
REST as well as using IBM
z/OS Connect Enterprise
Edition

*

*

*

*

No additional network delay
is experienced because everything required is on
the mainframe
Mainframes are the best of
breed for reliability, availability and scalability (RAS)
Transactions execute in a
robust security module using
z/OS Security Access Facility
and support HTTP SSL and
z/OS Communications Server
Application Transparent
Transport Layer Security
These transactions are
recorded in SMF records
allowing for transaction
analysis
Millions of service units
reduction for cloud and
mobile workloads tracked
by Workload Manager when
configured
Transactions are highly
IBM z Integrated Information
Processor-eligible
Transactions have additional
security as they avoid SQL
injection
All Db2 REST Services use
static SQL packages only, for a
very fast, stable and optimized transaction, and don't
use dynamic SQL
Application developers don't
need to know the source of
the data, whether it's Db2 or
another source, because JSON
