PROBLEM Pointer
Runtime Diagnostics with z/OS V2.3 offers new ways to discover issues
hat do you do when it seems that nothing is happening on one of your
systems, but you've got a SYSPLEX, and, based on previous experience,
you know that the system that seems hung may not be the system with
the problem? It could even be a deadlock among several systems between global
resource serialization (GRS) enqueues, latches or a combination of those serialization
techniques. It could be a combination of contention and other things that Runtime
Diagnostics detects.

W

Karla K. Arndt
is an IBM
senior software
engineer and the
product owner
of the Predictive
Failure Analysis
and Runtime
Diagnostics
components and
the Operations
Resiliency
squad.

Starting in z/OS* V2.3, Runtime
Diagnostics offers new solutions
that can help you discover the
problem quickly.
Runtime Diagnostics
determines if there's GRS enqueue
or latch contention at the point
in time that the f hzr, analyze
command is issued. To reduce the
number of contention instances
that may be fleeting and only
provide contention events that
may be hindering your system,
Runtime Diagnostics defines
minimum times that address
spaces must be waiting before a
contention event is created.
GRS enqueue contention is
defined in two ways:
1.

If the address space is
listed in the table labeled
"IBM-supplied address
spaces" in the "z/OS Problem
Management" manual (ibm.
co/2z62XZK), the address
space must be waiting for

2.

five seconds or more for an
enqueue contention event to
be created. All other address
spaces must be waiting for
five minutes or more.
For latches, if an address
space is waiting for five
minutes or more, a latch
contention event is created

Following the Blockers
After Runtime Diagnostics has
found contention on the system
being analyzed, it inspects the
list of address spaces holding
the resource, known as blockers,
and follows the top blocker that
has been holding the resource
the longest.
If the top blocker is on the
system being analyzed, Runtime
Diagnostics continues its analysis
to determine if any additional
problems detectable by Runtime
Diagnostics, known as events, can
be found for that address space.
If the top blocker is on a different

system in the SYSPLEX and that
system is at z/OS 2.3, Runtime
Diagnostics invokes itself on the
other system and requests that
blocker to be analyzed. If any
events are found for that address
space, they are returned to the
original system being analyzed.
If the event is another contention
event, the process of following
the top blocker of that returned
event continues until the last top
blocker has been analyzed.
Note that when Runtime
Diagnostics invokes itself on
another system, it analyzes only
the top blockers as opposed to all
address spaces on the system. In
addition, the rules for contention
time no longer apply once the first
contention event is found.
For example, in Figure 1,
page 52, Runtime Diagnostics
discovers that SYS1 has address
space W1 that has task control
block 004E2A70, which has been
waiting for a SYSTEMS scoped
