IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe Readership Survey - September/October 2017 - ST19

industries represents 6 percent
each. Automotive, hospital/medical and transportation/logistics
each represent another 4 percent.
Two percent are consultants,
while education, manufacturing
(non-computer related), education and medical/healthcare all
also represent 2 percent each.
With big revenues come big IT
budgets. Of those surveyed, 74
percent had a total 2017 budget
of $1 million or more, and 23 percent worked with budgets in the
range of $500,000 to $999,999.
An unfortunate few had less to
play with: $100,000 to $499,999
and less than $10,000, with each
group coming in at 2 percent.
Most respondents report having
two or three IBM Z servers running
z/OS* or other supported OSes
ranged, but several also have
between four and 10 or more.
Database use is similarly
diverse. For instance, 96 percent of respondents are using
IBM Db2* for z/OS, while 47
percent use IMS*, 43 percent
use Microsoft Access, 17 percent
use MongoDB, 72 percent use
Microsoft* SQL and 76 percent
use Oracle.
When asked whether the
percentage of their IT budgets for
IBM Z hardware and software was
shrinking or growing, 46 percent
said their budgets are remaining
the same and 23 percent said they
were growing. But a surprisingly
large number, 31 percent, report
they're shrinking.
Despite this latter figure, 76
percent plan to spend $500,000
or more and 17 percent plan to
spend $100,000 to $499,999 on
software. Additionally, 59 percent
plan to purchase a system/software and/or upgrade within 12
months. The remainder is looking
out a bit farther, with 19 percent
saying they'll make such pur-

chases within one to two years and
23 percent in more than two years.

Now and Then
When asked how much of their
annual IT budgets are spent on
mainframe application maintenance or development, a healthy
43 percent said 30 to 60 percent
of the budgets are spent this
way, and 18 percent said 15 to
30 percent of the budgets are
spent this way.
That may be why 54 percent of
survey takers indicated they have
more than 100 in-house developers supporting their mainframe
applications, while another
14 percent have 51 to 100. A
majority of respondents said their
mainframe applications are either
very strategic (48 percent), strategic (21 percent) or moderately
strategic (17 percent) to their
organizations' operations.
Mainframe applications, however, aren't the only ones they're
supporting. Of 51 respondents,
for example, 8 percent said they
were "just experimenting" with
Linux* and another 2 percent
aren't using it at all.
Those who are have chosen to
run Linux on a number of platforms, including the mainframe
(14 percent), x86 (24 percent)
and IBM Power Systems* (6
percent). A large number of them,
though, are running it on multiple
platforms, likely depending on
the use case.
In fact, many of them are
running several server environments, including dedicated
Linux boxes (77 percent), HP (59
percent), Intel processor-based
PC servers (57 percent), Cisco (55
percent), Dell (42 percent) and
IBM BladeCenters (28 percent).
Another notable inclusion is IBM
Power Systems, with 8 percent
of respondents running up to 10

or more with IBM i, 20 percent
running 10 or more with IBM AIX*
and another 20 percent running
10 or more with Linux.
Cloud is also coming into play
in many organizations, as all 53
respondents have indicated. For
example, 26 percent have gone
into production with public clouds,
while 49 percent have done so with
private clouds and 26 percent with
hybrid clouds. The remainder is
currently experimenting with it or
has taken no action.
When asked which of the
specified technologies/solutions
their companies currently use, the
following were the top answers:
cloud, IBM Systems Storage,
Linux, IBM WebSphere*, SAP,
mobile and APIs. Others plan to
implement many of those technologies within the next 12 months.
A longer list of specified computer applications and/or services
survey takers' organizations
currently use is an interesting mix
of solutions, including artificial
intelligence/cognitive, analytics,
application modernization, high
availability/disaster recovery,
managed service providers, office
automation and security. Some
plan to purchase these solutions
within the next year.

Lessons Learned
IBM Systems Magazine often
learns more from its readers than
its readers learn from it. That's
why surveys such as these are so
important. They give the publication and IBM critical insight into
real-world mainframe environments, allowing them to deliver
better information and services.
At the same time, readers can
discover what their fellow IT
professionals are doing and plan
to do in their data centers. This
includes the here and now and
the future.
