What if we were to marry
ServerPac with Software
Management?
What would we need
to do?
And, what else should
we do at the same time?

We at IBM have some ground yet to cover, but
we have made some advances. IBM has created
Product ServerPac, and we are whittling down the
list of products that aren't available that way.

Ease of Use
With that in mind, here is the
direction I would like to see
software instillation take.
First, when you log in to
Shopz, it would be nice to have
one selection for z/OS products,
without worrying about what
offering they are available in or
how they are packaged-with
or without SMP/E. From there,
IBM would ideally help build
a package that contains them,
and want you to install them in a
single set of operations, as done
for ServerPac today, but by using
z/OSMF Software Management
and workflows.
We at IBM have some ground
yet to cover, but we have made
some advances. IBM has created
Product ServerPac, and we
are whittling down the list of
products that aren't available
that way. IBM is working on the
infrastructure to allow products
packaged without SMP/E to
be processed by the ServerPac
production process. By Q1 2018,
it's planned the products will be
transferred from the Standalone
Products and Fixes offering to
ServerPac. Once finished, the
Standalone offering will no
longer appear as a selection
in Shopz.
To be a product installer,
Software Management had
to accept a portable package
format as input. That capability
was added in late 2016, along
with the functions needed
for Software Management
to be an SMP/E-agnostic
product-packaging tool. You can
now package arbitrary content in

Software Management and export
it as a Portable Software Instance,
which can be reinstalled by
anyone. Think of it as a "flat rate
box" for software.
So now a modern,
browser-based installer was
available, but it still lacked some
essential functions. Software
vendors, including IBM, need
to create packages using
automated processes; APIs are
available to define and export
software instances so portable
software instances can be created
programmatically. In June, IBM
added support for non-SMP/E
product descriptions and end of
vendor support reporting, and is
working toward defining support
for package acquisition and
for initiating workflows during
deployment operations, both
within Software Management.
Then, ServerPac can be
transformed to emit packages
as portable software instances,
to be installed using Software
Management rather than
the ISPF-based CustomPac
Installation Dialog. Also, Software
Management can be used to drive
workflows, replacing related
installation materials (RIMs)
in the ServerPac installation

process. IBM wants to redrive
those workflows for subsequent
deployment operations to help
migrate new software from
system to system, with Software
Management helping you track
and perform the necessary
customization and setup tasks.
Also, any software vendor on
the z/OS platform can use the
same set of functions for product
packaging and installation. IBM
and dozens of interested vendors
have been working to try to make
this a workable solution. I think we
all want to improve installability
on the z/OS platform.

Looking Ahead
IBM is trying to get everything it
needs on a z/OS V2.2 base via
PTFs as the functions roll out.
The goal is to enable Software
Management to be our installer
at some point after z/OS V2.2 is
the lowest level system used
for installation.
We all win only if everyone
wins, including the broader
community of software vendors
and mutual clients. As we
move forward, make sure your
requirements are understood
regarding how you want your
business to handle software
installation in five to 10 years.
It's how everyone involved
knows what needs haven't
been addressed.
Together, we can make
z/OS software installation much
simpler, and easier for people
new to the platform to learn.
Let's do that.
