IBM PERSPECTIVE
The Foundation for Trust
in Blockchains

I

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BILL BERNSTEIN

BM CEO and Chairman Ginni Rometty made a bold statement when she
said that blockchain will do for transactions today what the internet did
for communication in the late 1990s. And in my role leading the team
behind the system that processes some of the world's most critical transactions,
I couldn't agree more.
At the core of blockchain, a
distributed ledger technology,
is trust. Blockchains can't be
changed or altered, and they provide transparency to all network
participants, infusing trust into
transactions where it was harder
to come by before.
This trust is what makes
blockchain so transformative.
Because banks no longer need
to exchange and cross-verify
transaction data to complete
settlement processes, they can
settle transactions in mere hours,
where before it took days. Large
retailers can trace the origin of
products before they hit store
shelves, ensuring safety for
consumers. Small merchants
can trade in the global economy
because the technology removes
barriers to entry. People around
the world can secure their identities digitally.
The applications of blockchain
are vast and can be found in
nearly any industry. The need for
security is one thing that many
blockchain use cases have in
common. Whether it's personal
identity, financial data or contract management, the integrity

of the data and ledger that
flows through blockchain
networks is key. Security has
become increasingly critical
not only for blockchain,
but for all technology
touching the ledger.
That's where the
mainframe comes in.
Built to process and
secure high-volume business transactions, IBM
has taken steps to build
security into the system
from the chip level up.
With industry-leading
encryption technology,
we can deliver security for
highly regulated industries
and sensitive private data
transactions on blockchain. With secure services
containers, we can ensure
that privileged users,
including network admin-

istrators, can't inadvertently or
maliciously view encrypted data
on blockchain.
Blockchain is emerging as
one of the most transformative
technologies in our lifetime,
and the aspects that make it so
share much in common with
what z Systems* has enabled for
transactions over the years. But
what makes it so transformative
is really a simple concept: trust.
We're going back to the roots of
why so many companies rely on
the mainframe: Its built-in security and reliability instills a sense
of trust from CIOs to developers.
As we continue to make
the mainframe increasingly
accessible for developers, data
scientists and millennial professionals who may never have
worked with the system before,
we're excited about the ways
new technologies can bring new
users, perspectives and offerings
to the platform. By applying core
technologies and expertise-as
well as the core value of trust-
we can innovate more and help
our clients adopt mainframe
as a key part of their operating
infrastructures.
