IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe - November/December 2016 - 32

MATT GRINNELL
Technical specialist and
mainframe network
architect, ADP

came from the associate software
engineer program she participated in as a new hire at CA.
The seven-week program, which
Tonda calls a crash course on the
mainframe that provides a solid
foundation of knowledge, was
a selling point for her. "Having
an educational program already
laid out for the new hires was an
exceptional opportunity in my
mind," she says. "I had never
heard of a company putting in
that amount of effort to educate
its employees until then."
Kabir didn't know what to
expect before she started to
work with the mainframe. "I was
grateful that I was hired by a wellknown organization, and I knew
everything would be new to me,"
she says. "Everything I know about
the mainframe now, I learned on
the job and from my teammates, as
well as from the Marist z/OS Associate Certificate Program," Kabir
remarks. She offers this insight: Be
patient, and don't let any part of
the work overwhelm you.
Tonda, whose mentor insisted
there's no such thing as a dumb
question, says mainframe work can
be overwhelming and it's important
for new hires to ask questions and
keep educating themselves. "Seek
advice and knowledge from your
colleagues-they've been through
the same thing, so they can relate
and give guidance."
Schroeder advises new hires to
find at least one knowledgeable

"The mainframe is a very
complex and intelligent piece
of technology that has been
beneficial to organizations for
generations; the only way its
future will still be bright is if
young workers are involved
with it, learning about it and
are excited about it."

and trusted mentor. "Let this person show you the
ropes, teach you things that aren't written anywhere
and share his or her vast technical knowledge," she
says. "A mentor is your best resource throughout
your entire career, at any level."

Tips for Clients
Schroeder says businesses should choose their
wording carefully when crafting job openings. "The
biggest mistake clients make when advertising their
enterprise job openings is underselling the role and
responsibilities of the position," she notes. "A client
isn't going to attract bright, young, talented developers with an ad that says something like, 'looking
for someone to maintain our ongoing legacy support
system.' Clients must excite and entice younger people by emphasizing the strength, impact and value
of the application."
She advises clients to keep an open mind when
recruiting for mainframe positions. The best candidates may not have a computer science degree-

some of the best developers at
IBM have degrees in engineering,
English or music, she says. "Students who are strong and creative
problem solvers, critical thinkers,
passionate about learning and
who enjoy working on teams can
be excellent candidates for mainframe positions," Schroeder says.
The ideal work environment
has a mix of seasoned mainframe
veterans and new hires, Schroeder
notes. Clients should consider
hiring at least two new recruits
at a time so younger employees
can socialize with peers their
own age. It's also important for
employers to provide new hires
with opportunities to collaborate
with experienced employees on
innovative, new projects. "Providing a creative, open and fun
environment is important for
attracting and retaining new hires
to the platform," she says.
Clients can send their new hires
to the Gen z workshops hosted by
IBM (bit.ly/2d4qXPR). Designed
for those with fewer than five years
of experience, the workshops
offer a 360-degree perspective
on z Systems. Schroeder says
the sessions are designed to be
fun, engaging, interactive and
innovative, and are "chock-full
of opportunities to network with
other newcomers to the IBM z
platform."
