of database server, which is a significant benefit. "You don't need
to delay the new application
and its related business because
you had to inventory the legacy
database, its applications, and
third-party utilities or monitors

and embark on a three- to six-month migration
effort," Young notes.
In the Linux on z Systems space, he says a high
degree of consolidation of databases to Linux
from other distributed systems-most often from
Oracle or DB2-exists. This is commonly done to
achieve better performance and stability as well

7 Tips for Choosing a DBMS
O rganizations should keep seven points in mind when choosing a DBMS,
according to Richard Y oung, virtualization and Linux* for z Systems* team lead,
and H arry Batten, executive IT architect, both at IBM:
1. Know your primary application as well as the amount or type of data that
will be stored (e.g., text, binary, spatial or other specific data types).
2. Consider the number of simultaneous users (i.e., simultaneous
req uests to the database) the organization has.
3. T hink about database availability and how much outage the
organization could reasonably allow.
4.
Pl an for scalability by addressing what the organization will do when
the data and user counts in the database inevitably grow.
5.
Ensure database security by providing data encryption and user
management as well as managing data access according to different
user privileges.
6.
Consider how user- friendly the organization' s database management
and administration should be.
7. Understand what programming language the organization uses; certain
programming languages, such as CA- Ideal or Go, infl uence the type of
database you may use.
-C.V.

Know Your Database Types
Databases are broken into four categories based on data structure or size.
Recognizing which type of database your organization needs will narrow
down which DBMS will work best.
Inverted list: T hese map content (e.g., words or numbers) to its location in a
database file. T his type allows for full- text searches and is typically used by
document retrieval systems (e.g., search engines).
Hierarchical: O rganize information into regular records that contain other
records in a more structured way. Data is organized based on the relationship
it has with other data in the database- segments are j oined together. In this
type of database, only one parent record can exist.
Network: May have multiple member records or files linked with multiple
owner files and vice versa. A single piece of data can point to many other
pieces of data within the database and be pointed to by other pieces of data.
T his type of database can have multiple parent and child records.
Relational: T ypically used when many records are combined and
cross- referenced to produce results. T his type is designed to model highly
structured data that has been fine- tuned with mathematical precision.

as the license cost savings that
come from reducing the number
of cores required to host the
database servers. "It's one of
the few platforms where clients
are comfortable consolidating
database servers in a virtualized
fashion," Young says. "Many
times we see databases being
migrated to z Systems from bare
metal environments."

The Evolving DBMS
Clients choose a particular
database for various reasons.
"At one time, many clients were
making the decision based upon
the availability of so-called
fourth-generation programing
languages, such as Natural
and Ideal," Batten says. "These
languages provided a fast development methodology but were
proprietary in terms of DBMS
requirements and expensive in
terms of resource usage."
The introduction of SQL-based
DBMS led clients to lean toward
the simpler programming model
and latest technologies instead
of choosing the systems that
performed better but were more
complex. Now, Young says, clients
are shifting to models like NoSQL,
thanks to the requirements for
real-time analytics, big data and
integration with OLTP. Clients
with strict high-availability or
scalability requirements may
choose a DMBS with a multinode
clustered database that doesn't
require sharding or replicas.
"As SQL became the dominant
technology in the DBMS arena,
DBMS vendors retrofitted this
access technology to their DBMS
systems, which allowed clients to
retain their existing DBMS systems
while using more modern development techniques," Young explains.
As the need for achieving
continuous availability grew,
the DBMS evolved to incorporate
a sophisticated data-sharing
