and resolution.
In the female-dominated customer support group I lead in my
own workplace, this means getting
the customer up and running as
quickly as possible-not overanalyzing the problem. Some customers call us "the moms in the sky"
because they know they can call
and get an answer. We focus on
restoring the functionality that's
failing; resolving the problem itself
comes second. We work closely
with the development team,
and it's important here to bring
together the best skills of both
sexes. Working together means we
learn and improve together.
Great listeners are also great
persuaders, able to build arguments geared to satisfy the
question in the other party's mind:
What's in it for me?
This leads to success in communication, negotiation and analysis, all of which can contribute
significantly to the bottom line.
In addition, women are generous
with their time, expertise and
encouragement-qualities of good
mentors. Ego rarely predominates.
Some say women have better intuition, but it's more that they've
learned to gather data first and
then ask questions.
While many of these factors are
referred to as soft skills, it's often
easier to teach someone technical
material than communication or
team-building abilities.
A colleague told me, "I've
always thought women were
better managers. The typical man
is, 'Rah, rah; go team, go; my
way or the highway.' Women seek
consensus and want to get along
with everybody."

isn't enough to simply offer entrylevel positions. Women must see
a career path for themselves; they
need mentors who can help them
navigate the ladder effectively.
Flexibility also makes the
workplace more attractive. Surprisingly, this is one area where
Silicon Valley has gone backward,
with some workplaces forcing all
employees to work in the office.
Women have traditionally
needed to work remotely (or at
least to telecommute), whether
to care for infants or elderly parents, or to handle a challenging
medical issue. But commuting
can be stressful, and affordable
housing near the office might
be unachievable.
Working hours should be as
flexible as possible to accommodate the need both parents
have to handle day care hours
and other family issues. Family
leave is now required by law
in many places, but most don't
offer paid leave. In some cases,
the lack of pay may force one
to accept less-than-optimal day
care situations.

on-site lactation rooms, child
care rooms, a nap room, on-site

fitness centers or close-in parking for pregnant women. Companies demanding particularly
long hours attract women by
having services on site, such as
dry cleaning, adoption assistance, and nutrition and other
health counseling.
Women also must speak up
and share their unique perspectives while listening to others; we
all benefit from learning from the
excellence of others.
Consider how these changes
would make a workplace more
attractive to everyone. Imagine
how big your candidate pool
could be if you offered people
what they need to be successful
and happy.

We Don't Have
to Choose
I was fortunate. Throughout my
career, the companies I worked
for tried to offer work-life balance
options. Technology has made
everyone's life better; enabling
us to enjoy an interesting career
without sacrificing family life-
we don't have to choose.
Early in my career, one of my
mentors said, "Companies are
losing out on all of these talented
women. We have to do what
we can to help." It's time every
company saw the light.
