MAINFRAME SECURITY SURVEY downloads (27.3 percent), phishing (17.1 percent), software hooks or trapdoors (15.3 percent), and malware (12.4 percent). See the breakdown in Figure 1, right. This list is already long and seems likely to expand, which prompts King to say, "Everyone should be scared. They all have unique situations, and there's no one-size-fits-all solution." Indeed, the survey respondents hail from various industries (see Figure 2, page 36), including banking and finance (22.7 percent), government and military (8.6 percent), insurance (7.9 percent) and manufacturing (3.1 percent). Each industry has unique reasons and requirements for protecting data. For some, regulations and compliance requirements are key drivers. For others, damage to reputation or brands are motivators. "Part of it is legal compliance mandates, and another is having data the bad guys are interested Figure 1: What types of mainframe-related security threats most currently concern you? in-and the need to protect that," notes Nick Sardino, security offering manager, IBM z Systems*. "Otherwise, they risk reputational damage and financial losses. If your bank gets breached, for example, it's likely to offer credit monitoring and other mitigation TAKEAWAY s A recent survey of IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe edition readership found 54.1 percent of respondents are very concerned about security, 36.3 percent are somewhat concerned and 9.6 percent have no concerns. s 71.4 percent of survey respondents have encryption in place; 28.7 percent do not. s Concerns about cloud security include: monitoring cloud security infrastructure (57.2 percent), maintaining regulatory compliance (48.8 percent), monitoring workloads across multiple cloud infrastructures (34.7 percent) and monitoring cloud-based network data traffic patterns (29.4 percent). s Among concerns regarding mobile security are: data privacy (74.9 percent), access control (64.2 percent), mobile device loss or theft (50.7 percent), third-party mobile apps (43.1 percent) and compliance (32.7 percent). 34 // SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016 ibmsystemsmag.com services, and real costs are associated with that. Plus, everyone wants to keep themselves out of the newspapers." When respondents were asked how their organizations determine their security strategies, the responses were somewhat expected but instructional nonetheless. For example, 69.3 percent cited compliance needs, 68 percent industry best practices, 52.2 percent a risk-based framework, 26.7 percent costvalue analysis, 24.7 percent past attacks and 13.6 percent board recommendations. Mitigating Risks Many steps can be taken to more robustly secure increasingly complex and expanding computing environments, including the cloud, whether it's being used as a replacement for entire data centers or as components of them. However, cloud security concerns also surfaced in the survey results. When asked what they consider the three greatest cloud computing security threats, 80.2 percent of respondents cited keeping all cloud data secure http://www.ibmsystemsmag.com
