Ensuring Privacy
Some companies may be wary
of blockchain because of privacy
concerns. The blockchain used
by bitcoin is public, and the data
isn't encrypted. Anyone on the bitcoin blockchain can see all of the
transactions in the blockchain.
The only nod to privacy is the use
of a wallet ID instead of a name.
But IBM's approach to blockchain is dedicated to privacy.
"IBM is advancing blockchain by
providing a permissioned, secure
implementation of the blockchain," Dillenberger notes. IBM's
implementation of blockchain
provides privacy and confidentiality of its members and records
and has donated it to the Linux*
Foundation as open-source
software. Read more about this
in "Communications Chain" on
page 13.
The hyperledger blockchain
implementation IBM helped
develop allows users to encrypt
their transactions. "Unless
you give your encryption key
to another participant, no one
else can read the transactions,"
Dillenberger confirms. You can
configure the blockchain to
ensure that every transaction on
the blockchain is signed so you
know who put the transaction
on the blockchain. "You have
security," she adds.
IBM is developing platforms to
run blockchain securely and is
providing hardware accelerators
to boost blockchain operations
to make them more scalable.
Using its special partitions on
IBM z Systems, known as secure
containers, the company can
protect any software installed in
the containers, including blockchain. Software installed and
run in secure containers can't be
accessed by system administrators or root users. The software
stack within the secure container

can be signed, attested and
encrypted so you know no one
has tampered with it.
Using secure containers is
an advantage for users running

blockchain on-premises or in
the cloud. "You know your
open-source stack is attested,
encrypted and from a trusted
source," Dillenberger says.
