IBM performance team manager finds his balance

wenty years ago,
Otto Wohlmuth was
a marathon runner in
good physical shape when
his brother-in-law-a certified
mountain guide-organized a
hiking tour in Switzerland for
family and friends. Wohlmuth
joined the tour and climbed
the Allalinhorn, a 13,212-foot
mountain in the Pennine Alps.
From there, he climbed the
region's Strahlhorn, "and I learned
the mountains in the Alps mean
something special," he recalls.
Wohlmuth manages the
z Systems* performance team at
IBM in Boeblingen, Germany, which
is responsible for optimization of
z Systems offerings.
Hiking and mountaineering
help him in life by freeing
his mind. "Carrying all of
the required equipment in a
backpack reduces life to the

essential things, keeps me
focused on the vital needs and
sharpens my senses," he says.
"For me, it's the best way to find
a balance to the daily office job
where I sometimes don't even
notice the change of the season in
my environment."
Extreme hiking and
mountaineering aren't for the
weak: Long days of hiking and
cold nights of sleeping in a tent
with various weather conditions
require excellent physical and
mental shape. "Mastering those
challenges requires personal
dedication, a high level of
engagement and leadership
to manage unpredictable
situations," Wohlmuth says.
"These are skills I apply in my
daily office job as well."
While Wohlmuth prefers to
travel to the Alps for weekend
trips-because they're close to

home-he has traveled far and
wide for his hobby. In the past
decade, he's been on several
trekking tours in the Himalayas
in Nepal. He has made the
Khumbu trek from Lukla to
Everest Base Camp twice and
traveled the Dhaulagiri circuit
with a friend and 10 Sherpas. He
says the latter offers a glimpse of
the most awe-inspiring mountain
scenery on Earth.
Besides high-altitude treks,
the GR20 in Corsica-considered
one of Europe's toughest treks-is
one of Wohlmuth's favorite trips,
which he used as training for an
Andes expedition to the 22,838foot Aconcagua, the highest
mountain outside of Asia. This
mountain became his biggest
personal summit: He made it to
the peak on his third attempt
after canceling twice because
of weather. "This solo climb,
starting from Nido de Condores
at 18,279 feet, required all of my
strength and energy to ascend
to the peak and descend safely,"
he notes. "It was a very special
and very emotional moment that
gave me great satisfaction after
two failed attempts and a lot of
personal engagements."
The most difficult part
of extreme hiking and
mountaineering is training,
Wohlmuth says. Preparation is
key, as changes in weather or
health require clear personal
judgment of the situation, he
says, noting that the deaths on
Mt. Everest each year show that
lack of judgement caused by high
altitude can be deadly. And with
the destinations and experiences
Wohlmuth finds himself in, it's
important to be alert and ready to
enjoy his surroundings.
