Security From Every Angle
PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTIE ENGEBRETSON ANDERSON
nce when I was looking for a place to live, I contacted
a woman my age with a room for rent. Upon first
entering, she showed me her home security setup:
an alarm for doors and windows, outdoor wireless cameras
and motion detectors. "As single women, we can't be too
safe," she said, even though she lived in a safe neighborhood
away from main streets and had police officers living down
the street. To get inside without setting off the alarm, I needed
both my key and a code. For an added level of protection,
I locked my bedroom door before leaving the house.
This resulted in multiple types and layers of security in an
already-safe environment, similar to the protection provided by
the IBM z Systems* platform.
In the cover story on page 28, we examine a
Solitaire Interglobal Ltd. study that reveals IBM z* to be the
strongest line of defense among chief IT platforms in use
in U.S. enterprises. Its built-in security focuses on issues
organizations are facing today, including mobile and cloud,
and keeping information safe from outside and inside threats.
Learn more about security solutions and capabilities in the
feature story on page 34.
In R&D on page 20, we look at data privacy and consent
management technology being developed by IBM Research
to help enterprises provide more control over how and when
data is used.
Also inside, learn how Pacific Life is planning ahead of
retirements by training workforce members on the mainframe
now. Read about it in our case study on page 24.
A special, extended Tech Corner section focuses on trends
and updates in IMS* and CICS*, positioning the middleware
solutions to handle transactions clients are using today,
including mobile, the API economy and modernization. The
three-article section begins on page 50.
Whether for your personal belongings or your company's
most sensitive data, the right security system offers protection.
