Strike a Balance
One consideration when evaluating backup and recovery
options is the balance between
the time it takes for the data to
be made available versus the
amount of data that's backed
up. "When you look at recovery,
look at how much data you can
lose against the time that data
is available again, and you can
do that by type of data," Francis
says. "Not all data will have the
same requirements."
Using more than one solution
can help achieve the desired balance. "You can have one system
for critical data that you need
instant access to, and another
type for data that can be rebuilt,"
Francis points out. "For example,
you can have virtual disk storage
as a backup device for data you'll
need to quickly access, and tape
for noncritical data."
The media on which data
resides plays a role in how quickly
the information is made available.
Disk-based provides the fastest
method of recovery, which in

some cases takes just minutes,
while a tape library-especially if
it's stored off-site-can take hours
to restore data. Not surprisingly,
as a solution's speed of recovery
increases, so does the cost. Speed
and cost are directly proportional,
which is why many small- and
medium-sized companies that
don't require high availability use
the lower-priced tape for backup.

Tiered Approach
Francis encourages companies
to develop resiliency tiers for
their data. Tier one is for the hot,
or most frequently used, data
essential to running the business.
Tier two is for less important
data, followed by a third and even
fourth tier.
The backup and restore strategy
must ensure that all data and
requirements are managed in a
similar and consistent manner.
"If you have two databases that
are critical, make sure both are
backed up in the same way for
consistency-the same time
frame with the same media

Plan to Protect
IBM's data protection platform IBM Spectrum Protect*
(ibm.co/1NwYHEH), formerly Tivoli* Storage Manager, can be run
across all IBM solutions, giving organizations a single point of
control and administration for backup and recovery.
IBM Spectrum Protect is designed to work with IBM hardware
and OSes, so it has a better understanding of the technology
environment than a third-party solution that could require constant
updates and IT assistance. In addition, IBM Spectrum Protect
enables fast recovery for virtual and physical environments, and it
can reduce backup and recovery infrastructure costs by up to 53
percent. The solution also scales from small to large workloads.
To help companies achieve end-to-end IT service availability,
the IBM High Availability Center of Competency (HACoC) helps
define a roadmap of steps to achieve a backup and recovery
solution that meets mission-critical business processes. HACoC
provides high availability assessments of companies' IT infrastructures and assists them in following industry best practices.

Data Integrity
Management-
Resiliency
Prerequisite
Resiliency and recovery have made
tremendous strides in the past 25
years. Yet with some applications,
especially batch jobs, practitioners
still follow 25-year-old methods.
Business resumption and
resiliency plans have no awareness
of interdependencies between
databases and batch applications.
Application-aware recovery is
not where it should be, given the
sophistication of replication and
failover technologies. File corruption
or a rollback in time from one
application still disrupts others
down the line when the wrong
point in time or consistency point is
chosen. Unravelling and correcting
a misapplied recovery point
causes additional delay in return to
normal operations.
Today's world of 24-7 online
transactional processing requires
knowledge of: the correct copy;
the appropriate steps; and in
what order to restore to minimize
downstream impact.
Regardless of the resiliency
strategy selected, time to data is
the primary driver for business and
processing resumption. With an
average of 12 to 15 copies of data
out there, knowing what, when and
how are only ways to meet your
business service-level agreements.
Data integrity management is
possible even
when application
failover/high
availability
approaches
cannot guarantee
batch data
consistency.
