the need to move at a more rapid
speed in coordination with the
systems of engagement.
ISM: How can people take
advantage of these trends?
RR: The need to bring on new
developers has been discussed
for years. Today's developers
can easily learn a new language
such as COBOL or PL/I, but they
aren't interested in developing
the mainframe code because of
the development environment
provided. Why would a new
developer want to use ISPF
(Interactive System Productivity
Facility) when he or she is used
to a modern IDE (integrated
development environment)? For
this first transformation, the key
aspect is the adoption of modern
tools and development practices.
One way to help this transition is to
do pair programming between the
younger developers and the more
experienced existing developers.
This allows the more experienced
developers to learn the new tools

and processes, and helps the
new developers learn the existing
business logic in the applications
as well as the new language.
The second is the need to
transform to a service provider
from the mainframe system.
By developing APIs that can
be consumed by the systems of
engagement, the applications can
be developed using the loosely
coupled architecture, which will
allow the systems to be developed
faster and the coordination of
services to meet the current
demands of the business. This
also allows organizations to
truly become service providers,
providing services not only
internally, but possibly providing
those services externally to
drive additional revenue. By
becoming service providers, the
IT organization can become a
revenue source as well.
The third area is the ability
to move more rapidly with
small incremental changes,
allowing quick validation of the

SHARE Adds DevOps Focus
Recognizing DevOps as a hot topic, the SHARE user group
is featuring it as an educational track during both of its 2016
conferences: in San Antonio, Texas, from Feb. 28 to March 4,
and in Atlanta, Georgia, from July 31 to Aug. 5.
"We will feature a number of interactive sessions to
allow our members to speak about their experiences and
share firsthand information with their peers," says Martha
McConaghy, director of conference operations, SHARE Inc.
The practices within DevOps are always evolving, so
conference organizers expect continuing interest in the
subject and more education to come.
Read a letter from McConaghy about why SHARE
is focusing on DevOps and how it benefits members
(bit.ly/1NsqOCC). For a taste of San Antonio DevOps
offerings, purchase access to SHARE Live!, which features
DevOps technical sessions originally broadcast during the
event week (bit.ly/21KiiVR).

Converging
Mainframe
Applications
Into Enterprise
Agile DevOps
DevOps is an essential discipline
in a marketplace where the
ability to rapidly enhance digital
engagements with customers,
partners and internal constituencies
is essential for keeping brand and
value propositions relevant.
Unfortunately, many enterprise IT
organizations fail to converge their
mainframe application code base
into their enterprise DevOps pipeline.
This is a potentially fatal error.
Mainframe applications are core to
the business-providing indispensable systems of record, transaction
processing and back-end logic for
mobile apps. So, if you're not as
agile with your mainframe code
as you are with your Java* code,
your business can't keep pace with
nimbler market disrupters.
Here's the good news: COBOL
code can, in fact, be managed by
developers with mainstream Java
skills using mainstream tools and
agile practices. The technology is
there. What is required is the vision
and leadership to make it happen.
If this convergence doesn't
happen, the business will suffer-
especially when its last COBOL
SURJUDPPHUÃÀQDOO\ÃUHWLUHVÃ,IÃLWÃ
does, the business will be more
competitive and better able to
fully exploit the mainframe's still
unmatched power.
