IBM PERSPECTIVE Building on Strengths in the API Economy W PHOTOGRAPHY BY BILL BERNSTEIN hat if I told you every IBM z Systems* client is sitting on a gold mine of assets that can boost application development, create valuable business partnerships and unlock new revenue streams? The only barrier preventing these opportunities from being realized is a lack of communication: a common language would allow connections between groups fenced off from one another. APIs offer a way to open these channels. The API economy-fueled by these interfaces and implemented as RESTful services-promises to change the business landscape for years to come. The opportunities to take advantage of the API economy are tremendous for z Systems clients. They're already running their most important applications and housing their most important data on z Systems. Exposing those applications and data via APIs makes it easier for new groups, both inside and outside of the company, to securely connect to z Systems resources to open new markets, create new partnerships and roll out new applications. Clients can easily and securely accelerate innovation by using business logic that already exists on IBM z* servers. They can differentiate their business by creating apps that provide a richer customer experience through tapping into data, services and transactions on the mainframe. The speed, scale, security and availability of z Systems make it the ideal choice for handling applications and data that matter most to organizations. The API economy provides new ways to use these resources and capabilities to drive value for the organization. For example, a bank is running a robust set of applications on z Systems for handling core functions. By exposing these business services as APIs, the bank can connect its loan system to online auto dealers and real estate sites, and connect to a partner specializing in personal finance software to provide customers with added services. APIs also can be used internally to drive agility and innovation. Major retailers typically use z Systems servers to track inventory. APIs allow developers across the organization to connect to that system, fueling the creation of new applications that take advantage of IBM z assets. The technical capabilities for opening these possibilities are already available. IBM API Management can be used to create and ROSS A. MAURI General Manager, IBM z Systems manage APIs across the system. z/OS* Connect provides a simplified way for a non-z developer to get access to APIs from existing assets in a secure, controlled way based on existing security architecture. The combined solution allows for streamlined API development and management. IBM's acquisition of StrongLoop* (available on Linux* on z Systems) provides a way to create Node. js-based APIs for the enterprise and easily connect to z Systems assets, whether running Node.js on or off the platform. Along with technical capabilities, organizations need a new way of thinking about how they grow their business and expand their ecosystem. In the '80s, every business had a toll-free number for communications. In the '90s, this shifted to a website. In the next era for business, every organization will need APIs. With z Systems you have the core building blocks for joining the API economy. The next step is creating a plan and vision for incorporating APIs into your business model and reaping the benefits they can provide. JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016 // 7
