EDITOR'S DESK PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTIE ENGEBRETSON ANDERSON Ticket to Revenue ypically not one to see a movie in the theater, this past holiday season was different, as I've been eagerly awaiting many new releases. Knowing others were also waiting to see these movies and wanting to have a nice seat and good experience, I bought reserved seats ahead of time with my smartphone. After a few quick clicks and filling out some fields of information, the tickets were delivered to my email inbox. T An experience that took a few minutes, purchasing the tickets was quick and simple for me. On the other end, however, different applications and sites were talking to one another to ensure my payment was correct and the seats, time and theater I requested would be available. The average mobile app uses at least a dozen APIs as it accesses the services needed to fulfill a user's request. IBM is helping clients leverage these connections to drive more revenue. Marie Wieck, general manager, IBM Systems Middleware, describes how this is being done in a secure and scalable way in the cover story on page 18. As part of the digital transformation, IBM is also focusing on DevOps. Described as an individualized, continuous experience for productivity and quality, the feature article on page 22 helps you determine the right solution. Another area to find the best solution is with IT spending. In IT Today on page 14, find out how the IBM Eagle Team works with clients to get a clear picture of what and where money is going and how to make better business decisions based on it. The need is real to organize and store the increasing amount of information. Focus on Storage on page 11 examines the IBM System Storage* DS8880* family of storage offerings, looking at managing information easily to quickly meet an organization's demands. Administrator on page 34 explains how the new z/OS* Client Web Enablement Toolkit provides an easy-to-use, lightweight solution to applications to more easily participate as the role of a client in a client/server Web application. I only keep relying more heavily on my phone as the source to buy things and make plans. Knowing that the information can connect and my transaction will be processed quickly and securely offers great peace of mind, allowing me to focus my attention on the movie.
