choice of technology where
customers can pick the hardware
infrastructure that's appropriate for their organization and
workloads. With virtualization,
customers can use the system's
scale-up capacity to consolidate
workloads on a single virtualization and hardware platform,
gaining scalability, performance
and integration benefits.
Zannos: Ubuntu is recognized
as the leading OS on the cloud,
building on our deep developer
relationships and our strategy to
make the transition to cloud easy.
Canonical brings this focus to
the mainframe with Ubuntu OS,
Ubuntu OpenStack and our cloud
tools. Juju makes it easy to place
an application on the right cloud,
VM or container.
ISM: What's the importance
of having the KVM hypervisor
available? How does offering
more languages, databases
and management capabilities help?
Miller: KVM opens up a whole
new ecosystem for application
workloads. It gives administrators
and developers with Linux skills
the capability to leverage Linux
to benefit from the strengths of
LinuxONE. It's critical to opening
up the ecosystem and providing
that range of choice and infrastructure options.
Miranda: Having KVM as an
option on LinuxONE can help
increase the rate of adoption of
Linux. Customers now can run their
workloads using KVM to create
a virtualization abstraction layer
among all platforms.
Zannos: Today's rapid pace of
innovation requires the availability of a broad range of open tools
to help clients quickly provide
solutions to their own customers.
With Ubuntu, we are bringing
along our ecosystem, expanding

the base of open solutions on
LinuxONE further.
ISM: What kinds of workloads
do customers deploy on Linux?
Miranda: Databases, Web applications and robust messaging
managers for middleware play
a huge role. With the adoption
of all kinds of open-source
technologies available for Linux
on z Systems, this scenario has
potential to change.
Miller: Workloads that require
high I/O bandwidth, parallel
processing, high availability and
resiliency are the best fit such as
databases and Java* workloads.
Other workloads benefit from
being co-located with best-fit
workloads such as DNS and DHCP.
Zannos: New workloads such
as big data, healthcare analytics,
Internet of Things and mobility
applications need the performance
and reliability of mainframes and
the ability to securely handle massive amounts of data.
ISM: What changes have you
seen in demand for cloud?
Miller: Customers are using
mainframe systems to provide IT
services and cloud services. The
mainframe is an ideal platform
for gathering information and
turning it into business value.
KVM is the virtualization technology of choice for cloud. If you
combine KVM with SUSE's OpenStack cloud offering, you create a
perfect offering for high-density
cloud deployments. Businesses
need to invest in a platform today
that can scale with the demands
of the future.
Zannos: Acceleration, innovation and new workloads such as
mobile and Internet of Things are
driving cloud demand. We also
see clients leveraging cloud for
more complex and highly available workloads.

KVM: An Open
and Innovative
Linux Virtualization
Solution for
IBM z Systems
Linux* running on z Systems* can
play a major role in simplifying and
modernizing your IT infrastructure as
it supports quicker solution deployments and accelerates time to
market. IBM and SUSE have collaborated for more than 15 years
to develop industry-leading, Linuxbased technologies and solutions
for the mainframe, including KVM for
IBM z Systems1.
If you don´t have much experience with z Systems and the z/VM*
virtualization technology but you
are a skilled x86 Linux administrator, running Linux on KVM for IBM
z Systems allows you to easily explore
the potential of the operating system
on the mainframe. It also enables
you to work with a virtualization
technology you are familiar with to
separate your environment from
other workload environments on the
same system. You can create virtual
machines, assign resources and
use workload isolation and protection capabilities-and get all of the
ÁH[LELOLW\ÃRIÃWKHÃ.90ÃWHFKQRORJ\ÃZLWKÃ
the same tools and commands you
know from your x86-based environment, backed by the z Systems
hardware. Just try it yourself.
1
Currently SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for
System z* is the only operating system to provide
support for KVM for IBM z Systems.
