FOCUS ON STORAGE

A Huge Challenge
Many companies indeed have
diverse storage environments,
depending on the types of data
they're capturing, whether
it's near-real time, traditional
processing or archival. In some
cases, however, users may have
purchased the device from one
source and management software
from yet another, or simply gone
with the software provided with
the device, managing each device
or class of devices separately.
Because of this, storage
administrators have historically
had to learn the intricacies of
each piece, which have different
interfaces but similar functionality.
This can create issues when users
are attempting to work with data
from different sources.
"The real issue is that many of
our clients have heterogeneous
environments, whether because

"We are giving our clients the flexibility to have the software delivered
to them as part of an appliance from
IBM, be able to use it to apply to their
existing hardware environments or
use with hardware from other providers. To us and our clients, this is all
about flexibility and dynamism."
-Greg Lotko, VP and head of development for
IBM Storage and Software Defined Infrastructure

of use cases or acquisition
inheritances, and the amount
of data they need to store is
growing astronomically. It's a
huge challenge to manage and
administer such environments,"
remarks Greg Lotko, VP and head
of development for IBM Storage and
Software Defined Infrastructure.

The Spectrum Storage Family of Products
IBM Spectrum Accelerate* solution offers grid-scale block storage with
rapid deployment that helps increase delivery of data across an enterprise and
adds flexibility to cloud deployments. Optimized flash could be available on
Spectrum Accelerate in the future.
IBM Spectrum Scale* solution is flash-accelerated, industrial-strength, highly
scalable software-defined storage that enables global shared access to data
with scalability and agility for cloud and analytics.
IBM Spectrum Virtualize* software is at the heart of IBM SAN Volume
Controller and IBM Storwize* family. It enables these systems to deliver
virtualization that enhances storage to improve resource utilization and
productivity. It also streamlines deployment for a simpler, more responsive,
scalable and cost-efficient IT infrastructure.
IBM Spectrum Control* solution provides infrastructure management for virtualized, cloud and software-defined storage to simplify and automate storage
provisioning, capacity management, availability monitoring and reporting.
IBM Spectrum Protect* solution enables reliable, efficient data protection and
resiliency for software defined, virtual, physical and cloud environments.
IBM Spectrum Archive* solution enables users to automatically move
infrequently accessed data from disk to tape to lower costs while retaining
ease of use without the need for proprietary tape applications.

Compounding this is that
heterogeneous environments often
result in siloed storage, making
it difficult to share information
between different environments
and extract related data to make
concise decisions. Often business
opportunities get overlooked
as a result, to the detriment of
everyday operations and potential.
Additionally, this makes it hard
to maximize the utilization of the
total storage resource.
"Let's say each of your storage
devices has about 1 TB left. If you
have 10 of them, you have 10 TB.
But you only need a single 10 TB
chunk; you don't want 10 1 TB
chunks of storage spread all about.
This is a huge problem for the data
center, because they just have so
many small silos lying around,"
Hsu notes.
Storage deployment is another
issue. In addition to traditional
storage environments housed in a
data center or virtually dispersed
in a storage area network,
enterprises must also deal with
cloud computing, which requires
very high elasticity.

Construct and Improve
IBM's software-defined storage
philosophy helps address these
and other issues. Based on its
years of experience developing
software to accompany its
hardware, IBM is now turning
the notion of one-device, oneapplication on its head, realizing
that companies are running
increasingly complex and highly
diverse storage environments
that require ease of deployment,
management and the capability
to extract insight from them.
According to Hsu, the spirit of
software-defined storage can be
simplified into five components,
It's software that:
