improvement. At 10-9 dB, where
clients typically operate, FEC
improves the BER as much as
though the signal were 2.5 dB
stronger relative to fixed receiver
noise, a 77 percent SNR improvement. Because receiver noise is
basically fixed, an inverse relationship exists between received
optical power and the BER.
FEC allows FICON to operate
at higher speeds, over longer
distances, with reduced power
and higher throughput, while
retaining FICON reliability
and robustness.

Improved Availability
for Storage
IBM Tivoli* Productivity Center
for Replication Basic HyperSwap*
provides z/OS* clients with

z/OS zHyperWrite Technology
IBM zHyperWrite* storage technology (bit.ly/1KMzXlW) provides I/O
performance improvements for critical applications and middleware by
providing for the parallel execution of I/O requests when synchronous
replication is used, such as IBM DS8870 Metro Mirror technology. When
used together with IBM z13* FICON* Express16S channels and DS8870
16GFC host adapter technology with the 7.5 firmware release, clients
will see up to 61 percent reduction in DB2* Commit elapsed time for
transactions.

continuous availability by
masking control unit failures. The
HyperSwap function is implemented by redirecting I/O from a
set of primary devices to a set of
secondary devices by switching
the subchannel representing the
device. Without multitarget Metro
Mirror clients would be running
with a single point of failure after

a HyperSwap function occurs.
In some geographies, regulatory
compliance requires the clients
to report to the government when
they are running with a single
point of failure. Multitarget Metro
Mirror with HyperSwap eliminates
the single point of failure after the
primary disk failure.
With multitarget Metro Mirror
clients can have a third synchronous copy of the data-one
primary and two synchronous
secondary copies. The fourth
subchannel set facilitates the I/O
configuration definition for the
second synchronous copy of the
data so that it is available to be
used by a second HyperSwap after
the first HyperSwap occurs. Such
a capability eliminates DASD as
a single point of failure after the
first control unit failure.

Continued Leadership
The z Systems platform has a
strong tradition of close integration of its I/O capabilities
throughout the I/O stack including the applications, middleware,
OS, channel subsystem, I/O
channels, I/O fabric and devices.
This integration allows innovative
optimizations that improve performance, scale and resilience for
the critical workloads that run on
the mainframe. DS8870 storage
innovations in support of the z13
mainframe are the latest examples from IBM storage, z Systems,
DB2 and z/OS that deliver value
for mainframe clients.
