the end result. This can be an
invaluable strategy in the IT world.
For example, many companies
have increased efficiency simply by changing where data is
accessed by different applications.
Of course, it's not just limited
to technology.
"When I'm looking at computer
processing-and I get the average
spend per transaction-I can look
at that same construct for people,"
Lind explains. "One of the areas
where I've seen a lot of benefit is in
the actual workflow and personnel
structure of companies."
Lind's team did an organizational analysis for one company
that wasn't sure how to handle
its workload after some staffing
cuts. Following a careful review
of workflow, customer load
and related data, Lind and her
colleagues recommended that the
company hire back 5 percent of
the people that had been laid off.
And they did.
"Because of the streamlined
flow, they actually saved another
15 percent of their overall operational budget," Lind says. "Then
they didn't have to hire services

out as much, so their business
processing itself got more efficient
and they could apply their dollars
more effectively."
At the same time, data analysis
can help companies see where the
bottlenecks are in their processes,
and make those processes more
efficient. "This means employees
don't have to cut corners," Lind
says. "The company's efficiency
goes up, and the correlated errors
go down."

Reduce Risks
From legal liabilities to threats
from project failures, running a
business is never without risk.
That's why companies worldwide
have made huge investments in
their risk management strategy.
Lind believes that data analysis can give companies a major
advantage in this area. "That's
the core of analytics," she says.
"If I do this analysis, I can avoid
a problem."
For starters, data analysis is
key to security. "If you don't have
analytics to support your security,
you're going to get hacked and
hacked again," Lind says. Security

Essentials of Data Analysis
Analytics can be key to an organization's success, but only if deployed
effectively. To analyze data properly, Kat Lind, chief systems engineer,
Solitaire Interglobal Ltd., says organizations must have in place:
s 'OOD DATA COLLECTION AND INTEGRATION h-ANY MATURE ORGANIZATIONS ALREADY
have this capability."
s ! COMBINATION OF INWARDFACING AND OUTWARDFACING DATA h4OO MANY
organizations do not have this, so they're basically contemplating their
own navel."
s +NOWLEDGEABLE ANALYSIS h9OU CANÇT JUST HAVE A DATA SCIENTIST WHO KNOWS
how to analyze data; they also have to know the business."
s %FFECTIVE MODELING ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES h7E USE CHAOS MODELING BUT THERE
are other methods that people have used effectively."
s ,EADERS WHO TRUST THE ANALYSIS AND ACT ON IT h-ANAGERS NEED TO TRUST THE
findings, and know how to incorporate those findings into their decisions
for the organization."
-E.D.

of data assets is becoming more
visible, so leveraging analytics
is essential.
"I knew a customer who was
planning to deploy a large-scale
enterprise system in one huge
bang-flipping over some 30,000
users on a specific date and time,"
Lind shares. "Analysis showed
that other companies who had
done the same thing had a 60 percent success rate, but on average,
their schedules ran over by about
1,000 percent, and they spent
about 400 percent more dollars."
With that information in
hand, the client revised the plan.
Thanks to that big-picture data,
the client learned that the best
strategy was to apply a specific set
of critical decision steps. "They
did so, and came in exactly on
budget, and only five days late,"
Lind concludes.

Live a Longer Life
An overarching benefit of data
analysis is organizational viability. "Having good analytics and
deploying them properly lets you
navigate your way through the
chaos of your market," Lind says.
"When you spend money, you get
the benefits of what you're paying
for. You avoid risks, and you don't
fall into pitfalls as deeply."
Lind has been tracking the
success of companies for more
than 30 years. In that time, she's
noticed that the companies
deploying analytics are longer
lived. In fact, she says she's never
seen an organization go under
that is using its analytics properly.
"Analytics is important if you
want your organization to continue," Lind says. "If you don't
safeguard your data and use that
data to help you steer, you won't
be in business in five years."
