Vissensa offers several tiers
of service to meet the needs
of its varied clients.

many of Vissensa's clients consider
the company's cloud services their
system of record.
And it doesn't stop there.
"We've had situations where a
customer will ring up and say, 'I
deleted an email 10 minutes ago
and it's really important. Can you
get it back into my mailbox?' So
we use software for all types of
constant monitoring, whether
to get down to the small emailfile level or, on a larger scale,
if we have to restore complete
images or complete data centers,"
Groom says.

A Single Gateway
clients' requirements for allthe-time uptime and platform
flexibility-holding it all together
are these supporting applications.
Without them, the process of
managing the company's complex
cloud-computing environment
would be a herculean task.
This is in large part because of
all of the options Vissensa has to
offer. For example, depending on
what customers desire, users can
have multiple applications and
databases running on multiple
and heterogeneous platforms.
Making sure these users are
hitting the correct platforms as
required by their operations is
essential, especially because
their entry point to these systems
is Vissensa's single Enterprise
Cloud System.
When users enter this environment, they hit an intersection
on which there are signposts.
One signpost might ask if they
want to conduct an operation on
a System x or a Power Systems
environment. And then another
signpost might ask if they'd like
to perform an operation on an
LPAR on Power* or z Systems.
This system of signposts, of
which there are many, is automatically controlled by IBM

D

As Vissensa has
demonstrated,
Enterprise Cloud
System users
can divert different workloads
to a number
of platforms,
whether its
Power Systems
or x86.
And they can
manage those,
as well as their
OSs, from a
single gateway-
IBM Cloud
Orchestrator.

Cloud Orchestrator, depending
on the user.
"A lot of [IBM Cloud Orchestrator]
is based on open standards,"
Groom explains. "As a result, other
orchestration software based on
other platforms, such as PowerVM
and VMware, is all compatible.
This gives me the opportunity
to have this multilayer platform
which knows, for example, that I
just want to conduct an operation
on System x and not Power, after
which the appropriate database or
Web service app will be delivered."
Vissensa also uses tools such
as Wave for z/VM to dynamically
manage, administer and provision
Linux virtual servers in the z/VM
environment. Given that clients
are always looking for ways
to improve their operations,
solutions such as Wave are
critical. It allows Vissensa to
quickly increase or decrease the
size of z/VM Linux instances
depending on how its customers
want to use them, including in
burst-use cases.
Additional tools such as Backup
and Restore Manager for z/VM and
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager are as
equally important, being used for
continuity purposes, for example.
This is especially crucial because

Although Vissensa is in the
business of providing cloud
services, other companies can also
take advantage of the Enterprise
Cloud System and the supporting
software. Large enterprises,
in particular, could benefit
from this type of computing by
consolidating large data centers
into much smaller ones.
Additionally, companies don't
have to be tied to one platform.
As Vissensa has demonstrated,
Enterprise Cloud System users
can divert different workloads to a
number of platforms, whether its
Power Systems or x86. And they
can manage those, as well as their
OSs, from a single gateway-IBM
Cloud Orchestrator.
"We've proved at a commercial
level that you can mix and
match and multimode different
workloads across a range of
platforms," Groom remarks.
"So there's no reason why
other companies can't do that
internally if they so choose. In
fact, once they start lowering
costs and stop scaling out, they
can then become more creative,
roll out new products and
become more competitive."
