servers with fewer physical servers,
and more memory was needed to
accomplish this. We responded
with triple the memory in the z13
to meet their needs.
Q
A
What role does OpenStack
play in the Linux discussion?
OpenStack is available on
Linux on z Systems today.
It is critical that IBM provide
a standardized open platform
for our clients' workloads. IBM
will continue to differentiate the
platform capabilities underneath
these standard interfaces that
leverage the strengths of our
platform. OpenStack allows
virtualization management and
cloud management tools to be
able to talk to a common standard
interface no matter what platform
they are on.
When deployed across all
platforms, OpenStack will enable
software vendors to write to
those common interfaces and let
the OpenStack implementation
underneath direct and manage
the resource in a platformspecific
way, removing a burden
from the software vendors. The
tools themselves should work
the same on z Systems as they
do on other platforms because
they interact with OpenStack in a
standardized way.

Q
A
How does this benefit
clients and IBM?
For clients this provides
flexibility and opens up
choice and again opens up a
standardized interface into the
management of this platform.
IBM believes this is an important
step in providing standardization
and simplification to our clients
going forward.
How do mobile and Linux on
z Systems work together?
The IBM z13 platform is really
built for mobile workloads. We
see a lot of clients who have their
enterprise data, transactions-
great business assets-built up
in their z/OS environments. They
want to open those up to their
end users, wherever they are at
that point of engagement, be it
on their cellphones, point of sale,
laptops, tablets or wherever they
want to use that data. We see it
in airline reservations, banking
and other industries. They want
to open that enterprise data
up to their end users. Linux on
z Systems can serve as the back
end for those mobile applications.
It also provides a secure gateway
into z/OS. For example, the IBM
MobileFirst* platform is a great
place to run those capabilities
on Linux on z Systems in close
proximity to where the enterprise
data resides today. That reduces
the latency for the mobile back
end to the system of record and
keeps that security context around
that data and transactions, so
when you see the combination of
Linux on z Systems with z/OS as
the system of record, it actually
enhances mobile capabilities on
this platform for our clients.
certain workloads to environments
that are now pulling them back
because the characteristics they
desire are not available in these
other environments. If clients
are not exploring Linux on
z Systems, doing an apples-toapples
comparison, they may be
costing their companies significant
money. In many regards, Linux
on z Systems delivers a more
cost-effective solution with higher
qualities of service than any other
platform. There is a reason why
the top companies in the world
rely on z Systems. If you are not
looking into it, you have to wonder
whether the large companies have
it wrong or you are missing an
opportunity. Take a look.
evelyn Hoover is executive editor of
IBM Systems Magazine.
Q
A
How do you respond
to people who say the
z Systems platform is too
expensive to run Linux?
The z Systems platform
is often perceived to be
expensive. That's not the case.
If a company can only sell x86
products, you would expect them
to tell you x86 is the best platform
for all conceivable workloads. IBM
believes the various platforms
have strengths and weaknesses
and clients should deploy
onto the right platform for the
appropriate part of the workload.
If clients have a Linux strategy
that equates to x86, they are
hurting themselves by not
considering which platform is
the right deployment choice for
that part of the workload. We are
seeing clients who have deployed
