applications reside on the server
through intermediary servers.
That was complex, inefficient
and costly. Now, companies are
reversing the process and bringing
analytics closer to source-of-truth
data. Many organizations are
moving analytics capabilities to
Linux on z Systems to be coresident
with z/OS* or Linux on
z Systems databases. Because
of its versatility, clients can run
DB2* technology on z/OS, as well
as the DB2 database on Linux and
Oracle database on Linux together
on one physical z Systems server,
Hosch explains.
As a result, companies can
reduce the number of servers
they need. Rather than have each
department running the same
types of workloads, consolidation
puts the workloads in a central
location, eliminating data center
sprawl and reducing software
license costs, according to Foley.
Companies are also choosing
to use the mainframe due to its
security, qualities of service and
cost-effectiveness at scale. "There
used to be a perception that you'd
use the cheapest possible platform
to do analytics and bring the data
there. Customers are realizing that
there are secondary costs to doing
that as well as risk to losing control
over the data," says Ingo Adlung,
IBM distinguished engineer,
IBM Systems.
a Diverse Community
of users
The universe of Linux on
z Systems users is expanding
beyond the traditional banking,
finance and insurance sectors.
Large retailers, governments,
manufacturers, telcos and
healthcare are employing it.
Cloud service providers and
managed service providers (MSPs)
are another growing market as
Linux on z Systems represents a
business opportunity for them.
"MSPs look for the most efficient

platform," Hosch says. "If they
want to serve a lot of clients, they
choose the mainframe because
they can host clients separately
on the same z Systems machine,
it's secure and they can grow
easily within the server without
the need to add servers," he notes.
Other companies seeing the

and ISV software portfolios,"
Reeder says.
value of Linux on z Systems
include weather forecasters,
an art gallery and several
universities. "We have a
much more diverse set of
clients running Linux on the
mainframe than ever before,"
says Adlung.
Many companies start
small-perhaps with print or
tangential services-and then
expand Linux on z Systems
throughout the entire
business, says Romney White,
senior technical staff member,
z Systems Architecture
and Technology. Others
begin with mission-critical
projects to prove the value
of the technology. "Ultimately,
they end up in the same place
where z is the platform of choice
for deploying Linux-based
applications," he says.
Championing
open Source
The pervasiveness of Linux is
due to the work of the Linux
community, IBM's championing
of the OS and the burgeoning
open-source community.
Although IBM wasn't early to the
Linux party, the company was
excited with its commitment to
open source, says White.
That commitment was backed
by a $1 billion investment in
Linux by IBM in 1999. At the time,
Linux on the mainframe's main
workloads were Apache, FTP,
NFS, sendmail and Samba. Linux
currently handles a plethora of
applications on the mainframe.
"Now Linux is everywhere and

IBM's decision to invest in
Linux for all of its enterprise
system platforms was an eyecatcher
in the industry such that
customers saw Linux was moving
beyond the "toy" space, says
Adlung. Initially enterprises
saw Linux as a Web server for
the Internet and thought it
wasn't enterprise-ready.
"Some companies told us
that they thought IBM was
making a mistake by backing
Linux, but now they say it was
the best thing IBM could have
done," he points out. IBM
showed that open source was
viable and up to the job. "IBM
set the example by investing
in open-source technologies,
using those technologies
within the company and
supporting Linux within its
portfolio-servers, software
and services-which has
certainly made an impact,"
Adlung says.
Further examples of IBM's
commitment to open source are
its support of OpenStack and the
OpenPOWER* Foundation, which
are helping drive additional
interest in Linux. OpenStack
allows customers the freedom to
choose and move to satisfy their
business requirements, migrating
from isolated silos to a centralized
services deployment center. It is
being driven by the community,
and IBM is a strong participant,
notes White. The mainframe
is the first IBM platform to
embrace that support. "It's an
ongoing effort as the open-source
community matures and the value
for management of OpenStack
becomes stronger," he says.
OpenStack allows IBM and its
customers to take advantage of
what other companies provide
and ensure that customers
can have the management of
