PARTNER PoV A VALID User Now is the time for multifactor authentication T he largest major data breaches share at least one attribute: a privileged user ID and password combination was compromised, allowing access to data and resources that should have been off-limits. Today we need a higher level of assurance that user ID and password combinations associated with a particular human are actually being utilized by that known, trusted person, not by a malicious actor. Steven Ringelberg is chief operating officer at Vanguard Integrity Professionals. Multifactor authentication is a major step toward providing the assurance that a user is in fact the right person accessing critical data and resources. This stronger authentication method is especially effective for z Systems* because IBM Session Manager for z/OS* prevents the mirroring that plagues Web browsing from other systems and makes it more vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. The growing number of security breaches is causing organizations 8 // MAY/JUNE 2015 to explore how to implement multifactor authentication methods on mainframe systems. These breaches are initiated by attacks such as phishing and man-in-the-middle techniques that impersonate legitimate users, and stealing or utilizing lost credentials or equipment.
