Bringing in responsibility for IoT
devices only worsens things. "Now,
we're telling them to manage something that is effectively operational
technology," Poulin says. "They're
going to have to figure out how to
configure IoT devices so they're
secure within a new environment,
so it's going to be a completely new
learning curve."

Getting everything to operate
properly will take training time,
at best, and additional staff, at
worst. In either case, it will cost
money, which presents the opportunity for more security gaffes.
"I predict that most enterprises
are not going to budget for that,"
Poulin warns. "It's going to be
another cause for failure for secu-

Where Does Malware Live?
In addition to making recommendations on security strategies, IBM X-Force also analyzes the threat landscape, using
Web crawlers to compile IP reputation, a database of risky
sites. IBM clients apply this information in their firewalls to
help protect machines, devices and networks.
The most recent security report includes an analysis of
the number of sites hosting malware links. It also features
a separate assessment of command and control (C&C)
servers, which typically control botnets of the type that can
be used to send out spam. It's important to note that these
addresses may belong to malicious sites established to
circulate malware and spam or they could be legitimate sites
that have been compromised.
The initial data plots showed that 43 percent of sites
hosting malicious links were located in the U.S. China came
in a distant second at 11 percent, with Germany in third
place at 8.3 percent. Similarly, the U.S. holds more than a
quarter of the world's C&C servers, with Russia following at
about 9 percent and South Korea around 6 percent.
After first review, the team noticed a correlation between
the rankings and the number of technology users in a given
country. When they normalized the data based on the ratio
of infected IP addresses to the number of total IP addresses
in each location, the results proved to be quite surprising.
Now, the countries with the highest percentage of machines
hosting malware were Hong Kong, Lithuania and Bulgaria.
In the revised plot Germany ranked 10th, China ranked 20th
and the U.S. ranked 29th.
When the team reviewed normalized data for C&C
machines, Lithuania ranked first, nearly double that of
Belarus, which held second place. Russia shifted to third
place. Meanwhile, South Korea fell to 12th place and the
U.S. was 20th.
Although the analysis is intriguing, it's too soon to point to
Lithuania as a hotbed of cyber criminals.
"It could be a third party that realizes Lithuania has a weak
infrastructure so they go and set up shop on their servers,"
Poulin says. "It may not be malicious factors that are actually
in Lithuania, it just might be their systems are easy to hack."

Encryption
Provides Security
for Mainframe Data
Mainframes process roughly 30
billion business transactions per
day; this includes most major credit
card transactions and stock trades,
money transfers, manufacturing
processes and ERP systems.
More than 80 percent of corporate data resides on mainframes
(Eric Chabrow, 2013). Today data
travels on local PCs, on the cloud,
across one, two or three different platforms and the Internet. In
the past, mainframe security was
enforced simply by restricting access
to the server. That approach no
longer makes sense.
The Ponemon Institute's 2013 "Cost
of Data Breach Study," which the institute conducted for IT security provider
Symantec, reports that the global
average cost of a data breach was
$136 in 2012, up $6 from in 2011. The
study concluded that the cost per
data breach in the United States averaged $188 in 2012. The study found
that most data breeches could be
divided into three categories:
‡Ã0DOLFLRXVÃDWWDFNVÃ"&ÃSHUFHQW
‡Ã1HJOLJHQFHÃ"$ÃSHUFHQW
‡Ã6\VWHPÃ*OLWFKHVÃ!(ÃSHUFHQW
Although only one-third of the
breaches were caused by outside
malicious attacks, any action that
leads to unauthorized data access
should be of concern to any enterprise. That's why a data-protection
plan is critical.
