MAINFRAME

WITHIN REACH1
IBM provides a rich set of solutions designed to help
new mainframe programmers
By Caroline Vitse k Illustration by Lorenzo Petrantoni

or more than 50 years,
the IBM mainframe
has provided reliable
computing power that's
unmatched in the marketplace.
The mainframe also offers
opportunities to millennial
programmers.
Mike Fulton, CTO, IBM DevOps
for Enterprise Systems, has
worked with the mainframe
for more than 25 years. He's
witnessed its evolution and
has watched IBM reach out to
the younger generation, who is
showcasing how impressive the
mainframe can be.
IBM has a long history of
working with universities to
teach students how to make the

F

mainframe do amazing things.
One example is the Master the
Mainframe contest that IBM
hosts annually. (Read more
about the contest in the cover
story on page 20.) This contest
allows students worldwide
to work with the mainframe
through various programming
challenges. The students can
win prizes while learning
valuable skills they can take
with them into their IT careers.
Fulton says the students learn
to use development tools such
as Rational* Developer for
System z* (RDz) and Rational
Developer Traveler. Some even
end up coding COBOL on their
iPads-just because they can.

Mainframe Versus Everything Else
For IT programmers who haven't worked in the
mainframe space, Fulton says the applications
developed for the mainframe are nearly identical to
the applications developed for distributed platforms.
"One important difference," he says, "is that
you typically do not get a mainframe all to yourself
for development. You need to log in to the system
and share it with many other people. This model is
more akin to the cloud development model that's
emerging. You benefit from this shared model
by not having people on the team maintain their
own machine."
Those new to the mainframe will also benefit
from rich development tools like RDz, which is
shipped as a client/server tool. This enhanced
toolset helps users create and maintain z/OS*
applications quickly and efficiently. These modern,
user-friendly tools-including COBOL, PL/I,
C++, and assembler and Java* development
tools designed for batch, CICS*, IMS* and DB2*
environments-are optimized for the Eclipse
platform. Fulton says each person installs this rich
client on the desktop or uses a Web browser to
connect to the mainframe.
As for the programmers who are most comfortable
using Eclipse as a development platform, Fulton
says IBM has paved a path for Eclipse users. "IBM
has invested heavily in building our development
tools on the Eclipse environment," he says. "We
provide a consistent look and feel for our tools
so that if you have used Rational Application
Developer for Java development, you can pick up
