IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe - March/April 2015 - 33

So what IBM is looking to do
is not only continue to be that
leader in UNIX systems but also a
leader in Linux on Power Systems
and Linux on the mainframe. The
2001 decision to go with Linux
on the mainframe has profoundly
impacted z Systems. Currently, 82
of our top 100 clients run Linux
side by side with their z/OS* systems, and that has helped us really
change the number of workloads,
the kinds of workloads, the economics of the workloads we can
run on our mainframe platform so
this is Linux across the board.
ISM: Earlier you talked about
software-defined storage.
What does that approach
mean for clients?
TR: With software-defined storage,
the underlying system figures out
the best place to put the data-
how do I best virtualize all of this
and how do I best make multiple
copies so that in the event of any
kind of failure, which happens
more often with commodity disk,
it doesn't show through to the end
user. The end user sees the same
kind of reliability they would get
from having the enterprise-class
disk but doing so at a much lower
price point and getting much more
utilization out of their storage, so
it's economically very attractive for
clients. You need this combination
to support this world of big data or
these data-centric systems.
ISM: How does the recently
announced IBM z13* play into
this transformation?
TR: We introduced the z13 to
address the increasing needs we
see on mobile transactions and
real-time analytics being done
in line-for instance to be able
to do fraud prevention instead
of fraud detection. On average,
people move data off systems and
onto 11 other systems, so they
will make 11 copies of the data.

When you do that, you build in a level of latency so
the data is somewhat aged by the time it arrives and
gets analyzed. By using the z13 system, people can do
analytics in real time. This is really an answer to this
question of what do I do in a world where I have to
make real-time decisions and I don't have time to look
back at trends in the past day or past week. I want to

know in this moment what's the
right action to take, and so the
design of the new z13 really
captures that requirement.

Engineer Job-level Recoverability into
Your Application, Infrastructure and Operating
Architectures with VFI (the next evolution of DR/VFI)
Time to recover is the #1 challenge in an outage of any type and hardware
alone can't solve application recovery issues.
VFI incorporates new enhancements architected for today's requirements.
With availability infrastructure, your business expects five-nines of resiliency.
VFI provides job-level recoverability for both operational and recovery events.
Meeting business SLAs regardless of how the event occurred is the objective-
and is accomplished with VFI.
VFI ensures mainframe data availability, while saving time, money-
and ultimately your reputation-making your job A LOT easier.
