Designed
to Keep Running
The survey polled customers
on zEnterprise, including the
zEnterprise BC12, the highend zEnterprise EC12, the
midrange zEnterprise 114 and
the zEnterprise 196 models. IBM
zEnterprise System is specifically
designed with reliability,
availability and serviceability
(RAS). The inherent reliability
of zEnterprise servers are
further fortified by embedded
advanced security capabilities,
advanced encryption and
ruggedized features.
Deon Newman, vice president,
z Systems* Marketing, IBM,

notes that zEnterprise servers are
designed to keep running even
in the harshest environments.
"We have great examples of the
z Systems servers still running
in extreme situations, from
the most severe climates to
continuing to perform flawlessly
in IBM's portable, mobile data
centers in the Middle East and
Africa," he says.
The System zEnterprise
Reliability Survey findings
also augur well for the newly
announced IBM z13*. IBM has
enhanced the servers to deliver
up to 10 TB of available memory
and are capable of running more
than 111,000 MIPS. They will
also boost throughput for Linux*,
Java* and z Systems integrated
information processor workloads
via simultaneous multithreading,
and support accelerated analytics
processing to significantly boost
throughput and response time.
It will also reduce storage costs
for sequential data via new
data compression acceleration
capabilities.

Reliability
Requirements Increase
ITIC's 2014-2015 Global
Server Hardware and Server
OS Reliability survey, which
polled more than 600 businesses
worldwide in September, found
that 79 percent of corporations
now require a minimum of
99.99 percent uptime or better
for mission-critical hardware,
OS and main line-of-business
applications, up from 67 percent
in the 2012-2013 survey.
A direct correlation exists
between business continuity and
the monetary costs associated
with downtime. ITIC's poll
found that 30 percent of survey
participants estimated one
hour of downtime can cost
their organization upwards of
$1 million. Among zEnterprise

users the adverse impact on the
corporation's bottom line is even
higher: 62 percent of survey
respondents estimated average
monetary losses would exceed
$3 million in 60 minutes. These
statistics represent average
hourly downtime costs. They are
not indicative of a catastrophic
outage in which servers fail
during peak usage hours or
during pivotal data transactions.
A bank or a financial brokerage
firm that experiences an outage
in extreme circumstances could
rack up losses of millions of
dollars for each minute the server
is unavailable.

Premier Platform
"IBM zEnterprise System servers
offer unassailable availability
and fault tolerance. No other
hardware platform even comes
close," says Rob Enderle,
principal analyst, The Enderle
Group. IBM, he says, has an
advantage over competitors
because the failover/fault
tolerance, security, ruggedized
and RAS capabilities are
incorporated into the servers at
every level. "IBM zEnterprise
System is engineered to be
reliable at every stage of
the design process and the
proof is in the performance,"
Enderle notes.
Servers are now tasked with
delivering flawless reliability
even as they process massive
amounts of data and intensive
workloads. "Virtualization
environments in particular have
heavier workload requirements,"
Enderle says. "Any server
failures will result in greater
collateral damage. There's no
time for downtime. Businesses
expect the zEnterprise System
to always be available and
that's what they get-for a very
competitive cost-efficient entrylevel price point."
