user through a configuration or
setup task. A workflow is written
and shipped as an XML file and
may reference external files that
contain scripts, JCL or another
language text, including XML.
These workflows contain metadata
information (i.e., name, vendor
and version), variables and a
collection of steps.

Workflow Lifecycle

A workflow is created by using an
XML template, which is based on a
schema shipped with
z/OSMF residing by default in
/usr/lpp/zosmf/V2R1/workflow/
schemas/workflow_v1.xsd. The
schema is the definition of all
allowable XML tags and attributes.
In the lifecycle of a typical
workflow:
ĀÃ $ÃXVHUÃORJVÃLQWRÃ]260)ÃXVLQJÃ
his z/OS credentials authorized
for z/OSMF
ĀÃ $ÃZRUNIORZÃLQVWDQFHÃLVÃFUHDWHGÃ
by a workflow owner who
selects the XML file and creates
the workflow
ĀÃ 7KHÃZRUNIORZÃRZQHUÃDVVLJQVÃ
users to perform the different
steps in the workflow
ĀÃ 7KHÃDVVLJQHHVÃDFFHSWÃWKHÃVWHSVÃ
and become step owners
ĀÃ 7KHÃVWHSÃRZQHUVÃSHUIRUPÃWKHÃ
steps one at a time. Some steps
can be done in parallel and
others have prerequisites that
must be performed sequentially
ĀÃ 7KHÃZRUNIORZÃKLVWRU\ÃPD\ÃEHÃ
viewed to see what's happened
When all steps are performed
and completed, the workflow is
complete. Workflow steps may be
overridden or skipped as needed
by an installation.

Accessing the
Workflows Task

Access the Workflows task by
clicking "Workflows" on the
Navigation bar of the z/OSMF

interface (see Figure 1, page 52).
When you click "Workflows,"
the main Workflows window
opens (see Figure 2, page 52).
This window shows all workflows
that have been created. They can
be modified, deleted, viewed or
opened. If this is the first time you
are accessing the Workflows task,
no workflows will appear.

Creating a Workflow
Instance
A workflow consists of one
or more units of work to be
performed on the z/OS system,
as described by the workflow
definition-one or more XML
files that describe and define the
workflow. A workflow instance
is created when the Workflows
task is used to create an instance
of a workflow from a supplied
workflow definition file.
Workflow steps can be manual
or automated. If all prerequisites
are met, the user can kick off the
steps to be performed as long
as each step meets the criteria
and completes successfully. For
example, suppose a configuration
function requires that 10 jobs
be run one after the other. A
user could provide all of the
variable input in a property
file and indicate that once the
workflow instance is created,

the workflow can be performed
automatically and all of the steps
can be executed in order without
requiring manual intervention.

An area where z/OSMF workflows
can help an enterprise is
streamlining the migration of
software from one release to
another. To get started, IBM is
providing the workflow for z/OS
release migration as a sample.
The contents of the z/OS V2.1
Migration manual have been
encapsulated into a z/OSMF z/OS
V2.1 Migration Workflow (http://
ibm.co/1nk848w). This workflow
makes the z/OS V2.1 migration an
interactive, step-by-step process.
Two Workflow XML documents
are provided: one for a migration
from z/OS V1.13 to V2.1, and one
for a migration from z/OS V1.12
to V2.1. Select the Workflow
XML document you need. The
Workflow XML documents
are identical to the z/OS V2.1
Migration book (http://ibm.
co/1qtcgb4).

Getting Started
z/OSMF provides the centrally
managed foundation for your
journey toward simplification
and modernization of z/OS
management tasks for system
programmers. z/OSMF Workflows
furthers those simplification
initiatives by capturing knowledge
and consolidating existing
procedures into a more accessible
abstract form.
Leverage your investments
in System z* and enhance what
you've already deployed by
implementing z/OSMF. If you'd like
some assistance with deployment,
IBM STG System z Lab Services
subject matter experts can help
you understand, plan, implement
and integrate z/OSMF into your
data center environment.
