TECH CORNER SIMPLIFYING Solutions The new z/OSMF Workflows feature optimizes sets of system programming tasks W ith z/OS* Management Facility (z/OSMF), users get a product that simplifies, optimizes and modernizes the z/OS system programmer experience, delivering solutions in a task-oriented, Web-browserbased UI with integrated user assistance. While the OS has been delivering simplification since it was introduced, z/OSMF brings a new dimension and focus to simplification. Anuja Deedwaniya is a senior technical staff member for the z/OS Development lab and a software architect for the z/OS Simplification and System Management initiative and IT analytics. George Ng is a senior certified IT management consultant for IBM Systems and Technology Group Lab Services. This article primarily focuses on a new core feature available in z/OSMF version 2.1 called Workflows, which further enhances z/OS simplification initiatives. Customers want a Helping simplify and automate the most common systems programmer (sysprog) tasks, z/OSMF not only reduces the time it takes to deal with everyday issues, but it also provides a simpler interface for new programmers. The need for it was brought about by an increase in the number of new sysprogs due to the retirement of older sysprogs and the increased scope of responsibilities for the mainframe programmers. z/ OSMF won't replace sysprogs, but it can reduce the time it takes to do many tasks and reduce the chance of errors. z/OSMF can help: ĀÃ ,PSURYHÃV\VWHPVÃSURJUDPPHUÃ productivity and software management capabilities ĀÃ 3URYLGHÃHDVLHUÃWUDLQLQJÃIRUÃQHZÃ systems programmers ĀÃ ,PSOHPHQWÃVWDQGDUGL]HGÃEHVWÃ practices 50 // SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014 What Is z/OSMF Workflows? consistent, simplified and less error-prone way to configure products on z/OS. z/OSMF Workflows is a new function introduced in z/OSMF V2.1 that is part of the z/OSMF FRUHÃLQVWDOODWLRQÃ,WÃSURYLGHVÃDÃ framework for implementing a guided, step-based activity flow Benefits of z/OS V2.1 Migration Though z/OSMF V2.1 is a prerequisite for using the z/OS* V2.1 migration information, benefits for using the z/OS V2.1 migration workflow files include: s 4HE Z/3 6 POST INSTALLATION MIGRATION ACTIONS CAN BE assigned and tracked once you have z/OSMF V2.1 up and running s 9OU CAN DETERMINE IF YOU HAVE MISSED ANY Z/3 6 migration actions by using the workflow to ensure appli cable actions weren't overlooked s 9OU CAN GET A HEAD START LEARNING HOW TO MANEUVER IN THE z/OSMF Workflow ahead of the migration so that subse quent use of the Workflow for the actual migration is familiar to you s 9OU CAN PROVIDE EARLY FEEDBACK ON EXPLOITING Z/3 V2.1 migration with z/OSMF Workflow, helping improve FOLLOW ON DELIVERABLES FOR Z/3 MIGRATION THAT MAY COME s 9OU CAN IDENTIFY ANY ITEMS THAT WOULD BE HELPFUL FOR Z/3 migration within the z/OSMF Workflow itself
