open-source community.
Although IBM wasn't early to the
Linux party, the company was
excited with its commitment to
open source, says White.
That commitment was backed
by a $1 billion investment in
Linux by IBM in 1999. At the time,
Linux on the mainframe's main
workloads were Apache, FTP,
NFS, sendmail and Samba. Linux
currently handles a plethora of
applications on the mainframe.
"Now Linux is everywhere and
IBM continues to lead the way in the
Linux space with both IBM and ISV
software portfolios," Reeder says.
IBM's decision to invest in Linux
for all of its enterprise system
platforms was an eye-catcher in
the industry such that customers
saw Linux was moving beyond the
"toy" space, says Adlung. Initially
enterprises saw Linux as a Web
server for the Internet and thought
it wasn't enterprise-ready.
"Some companies told us that
they thought IBM was making a
mistake by backing Linux, but
now they say it was the best thing
IBM could have done," he points
out. IBM showed that open source
was viable and up to the job. "IBM
set the example by investing in
open-source technologies, using
those technologies within the
company and supporting Linux
within its portfolio-servers,
software and services-which
has certainly made an impact,"
Adlung says.
Further examples of IBM's
commitment to open source are
its support of OpenStack and the
OpenPOWER* Foundation, which
are helping drive additional
interest in Linux. OpenStack
allows customers the freedom to
choose and move to satisfy their
business requirements, migrating
from isolated silos to a centralized
services deployment center. It is
being driven by the community,

"We have a much more diverse set of clients
running Linux on the mainframe than ever before."
- Ingo Adlung, IBM distinguished engineer, IBM Systems and Technology Group

and IBM is a strong participant,
notes White. The mainframe
is the first IBM platform to
embrace that support. "It's an
ongoing effort as the open-source
community matures and the value
for management of OpenStack
becomes stronger," he says.
OpenStack allows IBM and its
customers to take advantage of
what other companies provide
and ensure that customers
can have the management of
virtualization across platforms
including POWER* and x86 that
include Linux and Microsoft*
products. "It gives customers
freedom of choice but lets them
continue to extract the value
of the mainframe as they move
to this different management
paradigm," he says.
OpenStack helps customers
leverage their hardware and
virtualization management
investments, no matter what the
system is. "A customer that has
lots and lots of System z servers is
likely to have lots of x86," White
says. "If the customers use an
OpenStack application, it can be
used to manage both x86 and the
mainframe."

Future Innovation
Linux on the mainframe has a
bright future, but a few presentday challenges still exist. "Still
today some people don't know
Linux can run on the mainframe
and others who do know Linux
is on the mainframe think it's

just an operational appearance,"
says Adlung. "Linux on the
mainframe really is Linux and
not a proprietary platform that's
running on System z."
And Hosch adds, "That's
important to know when running
Linux workloads, it's the
underlying platform that makes
the difference for the business."
Some believe it's necessary to
move off the mainframe to run
Linux and save money. That's not
the case according to IBM. "We
have demonstrated repeatedly
that companies have saved real
money using the mainframe
and Linux," Reeder says. For
example, a large insurer was able
to save $46 million in capital and
operational expenditures by using
virtualization on System z with
Linux that's optimized for diverse
computing needs.
Many organizations are eager
to employ Linux on System z
to capture the cost-savings and
innovation that the platform
provides. MSPs will continue to
deploy it to serve an ever-growing
customer base. Application
development will forge ahead for
cloud and analytics. Data center
consolidation will also spur the
move to Linux and System z.
Customers will continue to see
the advantage of choice that open
source gives them, thanks to that
little penguin and IBM.
