TECH SHOWCASE

means you are getting the most
you can out of the machine. That
prevents I/O workload contention
issues and enables you to meet
your service-level agreements,
Reeder explains.
The System z server's flexibility
allows it to run workloads in
parallel. If one workload needs more
resources, it can take from a lower
prioritized one in order to honor the
service agreement with the client.
"That's a big benefit," says Gerald
Hosch, worldwide offering manager,
Linux on System z.
The combination also lowers
software costs. Most software is
licensed by the core and as the
mainframe core can do more,
fewer licenses are required.
"Because of the System z server's
high utilization of the core, you
are better leveraged in regard to
your license," Hosch notes.

Workload Prowess

analytics workloads. Analytics
are a good fit due the proximity
to the enterprise data on System z
and the way the applications are
structured and run. "The System z
server's thread performance,
large shared memory nest,
exceptional virtualization, highspeed connectivity, simplified
infrastructure, reliability,
availability and security enable
analytics to be done quickly,
effectively and securely on the
platform," Foley explains.
An analytics solution might
include Cognos*, SPSS* or
DataStage* as part of the solution,
and running these in a robust
virtualized environment on a
reliable mainframe system is
an efficient way to deploy these
analytics capabilities, Foley says.
With Hadoop processing now
available on Linux on System z,

The OS is also adept at handling
diverse workloads simultaneously,
which is a key reason enterprises
are running it on System z. The
emphasis on cloud, analytics, big
data, mobile, social and security
means that companies need Linux
technology-enabled systems
that can handle those workloads
efficiently and smoothly.
Customers are running data
services, business applications,
security and infrastructure
services, mobile application
hosting, cloud hosting,
messaging and business
process management workloads
using Linux on System z (see
"Workloads Available for Linux
on System z" below). "Linux has
always been important but is
becoming more so," Foley adds.
This is true for big data and

Workloads Available for Linux on System z
