6 Mobile Best Practices
Although the move to mobile may on some levels seem daunting, IBM offers
six best practices:
1. A corporatewide organizational communications strategy. Departments shouldn't work in isolation on their mobile efforts. For example, a
line of business shouldn't roll out a new mobile application without the
infrastructure team knowing the volume expectations, expected peaks or
planned campaigns for the application. The IT team should also have at
least a rudimentary understanding of the architecture of the applications
and how it should drive the application and data servers.
2. An understanding of which application and data assets they have
in place and how they can fit into the mobile space. Most companies, after all, don't want to replace what they have, for two significant
reasons: cost and risk. They can save money and reduce risk (including
possible downtime and security issues) by knowing what they have in
place and leveraging that to fit into their mobile strategies.
3. An awareness of how to best structure mobile applications with
existing transactions and data. By understanding that mobile transactions are more granular than traditional transactions, companies can
optimize the interactions between the mobile device and the system of
record transactions so that one mobile request calls one or a few transactions rather than dozens.
4. Companies must fully understand the security exposures they
may face in terms of mobile and, if needed, compensate for them.
Often, this simply involves leveraging security procedures and policies that
are already in place for other online channels so they also apply to mobile
applications.
5. Accounting for capacity planning, with an emphasis on system
analytics. IT should have a well-grounded understanding of what's going
to change when mobile computing is added to the traditional computing
mix. Capacity and performance teams should note current patterns and
how they might be affected by the addition of mobile computing. By spotting the potential for spikes, they can leverage Capacity on Demand and
avoid paying for extra-and perhaps excess-full-time processing. This
analysis should consider both mainframe and mobile app loads.
6. Considering time to market. The mobile-app market is volatile, with
changes being introduced on a near-daily basis, and organizations must
keep up with this to remain competitive. As a result, mainframe development teams have to turn application changes and enhancements around
much faster than with traditional applications. Some clients are already
rolling out changes to their mobile-facing applications once a month. A
driver for the adoption of modern and agile development and automated
testing, this can represent a cultural change for some application-development IT teams.

organizations that embark on
this path may be missing out
on some key aspects of the
System z platform that others may
not offer, including CoD.
Because mobile access to
transactional systems takes
place throughout the day, it's
difficult to define when peak
usage might occur. This is unlike
with traditional browser-based
system access, which typically
occurs during largely expected
and definable times of the
day. By using CoD, however,
organizations can quickly
respond to upticks in mobile
usage, having various CoD-based
system components that will
automatically react to changes in
system performance depending
on usage-often within seconds.
That's why Castano emphasizes
three points when it comes to
managing the infrastructure
for mobile applications. As he
explains, "First, you need a
system that can respond and
scale immediately. Second, you
need to recognize that traditional
spikes in system workloads will
change, because mobile is readily
accessible anytime, anywhere.
Third, you need to know that the
types of transactions have also
changed. There are more inquiries
than updates when people use
mobile applications."

BALANCING INNOVATION
AND REVENUE
This last point is key. For
example, traditional brick-andmortar or even browser-based
interactions with systems of
record tend to be update heavy,
whereas mobile transactions are
less so. Additionally, the nature
of user interactions with mobile
applications is more granular
in nature. Because of this,
applications that in the past had
multiple functions might not be
appropriate for mobile devices.
