provided-CPU analysis, local
lock suspension analysis and
loop detection for a task control
block (TCB). High CPU usage
occurs when any task is using
more than 95 percent of a single
CPU. A local lock suspension
event is created when an address
space is suspended for more than
50 percent of the time. A TCB
loop is detected by examining
various system control blocks for
indications of consistent, repetitive
activity that typically exists when
a task is in a loop. When both high
CPU and a loop are detected for a
job, it usually indicates that job is
truly in a loop.

used it right away." Don't be
one of those people. Take a
few minutes to set up Runtime
Diagnostics, start the address
space (preferably at IPL) and
familiarize yourself with the
modify command so you're

prepared in the event of a system
problem. Then, discard all of
your old sticky notes containing
manual functions covered by
Runtime Diagnostics and replace
them with one new one that says
"Use Runtime Diagnostics."

Additional Parameters
By default, all analysis is done
for the system on which Runtime
Diagnostics was invoked.
However, you can specify to have
it done for a different system
in your sysplex by specifying
the SYSNAME parameter on the
invocation. When the SYSNAME
specifies a different system,
only the OPERLOG critical
message detection and the
enqueue contention checking
are performed.
The DEBUG parameter performs dumps when events are
found or when they're not found
and you think they should be. It
should only be used by request of
IBM service.

Don't Forget
Since its inception, Runtime
Diagnostics has been shown to be
one of the easiest, most accurate
and most frequently forgotten
components in z/OS. Feedback
has been positive except for two
common complaints that can
easily be resolved.
The first is: "I didn't know it
existed." This article fixes that.
The second is: "I don't use it
very often, and in my panic, I
forgot about it or I would have
