on the sysplex in region 2 and the standby workload
instance A is executing on the sysplex in region 1.
Workload A is being processed in the sysplex in
region 2 and the updates are being replicated to the
sysplex in region 1.
After the planned workload switch has been
initiated, GDPS/A-A waits for work to quiesce
on the active workload instance in region 2 and
directs new connections to the standby workload
instance in region 1. The standby workload
instance becomes the active workload instance
in seconds (see Figure 3, page 45). Committed
transactions are queued. Additionally, an optional
script can automatically be invoked to perform
customized processing, such as activating On/Off
Capacity on Demand.
Once a planned workload switch has completed,
maintenance can be performed against the workload
instance in region 2. After maintenance activity
concludes, the active workload instance queued
updates in region 1 will be sent to the standby
workload instance in region 2 to synchronize them.
Once data is synchronized, a planned workload
switch to make the standby workload instance
in region 2 is performed, it becomes the active
workload instance, and then maintenance can be
performed against the workload instance in region 1
Similarly, if sysplex or site maintenance is
required-for example, site power maintenance-
GDPS/A-A can perform a planned region switch.
GDPS/A-A will perform the planned workload switch
in parallel across all workloads running on the
sysplex undergoing maintenance.
When workload failures occur, GDPS/A-A will
perform a policy-based unplanned workload switch
from the active workload instance to the standby
workload instance, as seen in the starting position
described in Figure 2.
Each workload's health is constantly monitored.
When GDPS/A-A detects a workload failure (see Figure
4, right), GDPS/A-A processing is based upon policy.
In automatic mode, new connections will be directed
to the standby workload instance. In manual mode,
an operator responds to prompts to specify that new
connections be directed to the standby workload
instance. In either case, the standby workload
instance becomes the active workload instance
in seconds to maintain application availability.
Additionally, an optional script can automatically be
invoked to perform any customized processing, such
as activating capacity backup.
Similarly, if a sysplex or site fails, GDPS/A-A will
perform the unplanned workload switch in parallel

an Unplanned Workload Switch

Figure 5: Active/Query Configuration

Benchmarks
The GDPS* test lab conducted GDPS/A-A benchmarks.
The configuration consisted of one active/standby workload,
one active/standby workload with two associated active/
query workloads and one active/standby workload with one
associated active/query workloads.
The planned region switch took less than two minutes.
The unplanned region switch took less than 20 seconds.
Additionally, a simulated 15,000 kilometers between
regions benchmark demonstrated negligible impact on
replication latency.
