Isracard
headquarters in
Tel Aviv, Israel

more than 50 million business
transactions per month.
Although owned by Israel's
largest bank, Hapoalim, it
operates as a largely separate and
independent entity, having its own
HR department, marketing arm,
call center and IT infrastructure.
This last bit is particularly crucial,
given that the company must
remain operational 24-7.
"If we experience a major
catastrophe, like an earthquake
or a geopolitical conflict, our
customers will be sympathetic
with us," Shorkend says. "But if
it's a local issue, such as a fire or
flood in our data center, they'll be
much less understanding. If they
can't use our card, they'll use one
issued by another company. That's
lost money for us."
For that reason, the company
has rigorous DR processes in
place. An IBM zEnterprise* BC12
(zBC12)-which recently took
the place of two IBM zEnterprise
114s-is the company's primary
production system, and an IBM
zEnterprise 196 acts as a remote
backup box. Data from the zBC12
z/OS* environment, using an IBM
System Storage DS8870* for DASD,
is synchronously relayed via IBM
Metro Mirroring to another DS8870
at the backup site to ensure easyto-restore DR operations.
Although Isracard has some
Linux* servers on the zBC12

The team instrumental in

UP CLOSE
CUSTOMER: Isracard Group
HEADQUARTERS: Tel Aviv, Israel
BUSINESS: Financial Services
CHALLENGE: Ensuring its backup disaster
recovery boxes would IPL if needed
SOLUTION: Crafted a clever solution that
takes daily snapshots of backups to ensure
they're not corrupted
HARDWARE: An IBM zEnterprise BC12,
IBM zEnteprise 196 and two IBM
System Storage DS8870s
SOFTWARE: IBM DB2 for z/OS, IBM z/VM
and BMC Software's Control-M and Control-O

running under IBM z/VM* for customer-facing
applications, the bulk of its core processing takes place
within the z/OS environment.
"The mainframe is our system of record," Shorkend
explains. "It will run, for example, an application that
authorizes credit card transactions. You swipe your
credit card at your point of sale, and that will come up
to our mainframe and you'll either get a yay or nay as
to whether the transaction is going to happen or not."

A NEW APPROACH
When the other Israeli bank's DR environment failed
in 2008, leading to those many hours of downtime,
Isracard saw this as an opportunity to contemplate
its own DR workings. Like most mainframe users, it
was conducting DR business as usual, backing up in a

26 // JULY/AUGUST 2014 ibmsystemsmag.com

synchronous manner to an off-site
box. But that one logical database
corruption raised some eyebrows.
"Everything was working fine
for them until they IPLed their
production system. Something
had happened within DB2*
that crippled their database,"
Shorkend recalls. "Of course, that
had already been replicated to
their backup box, so that system
was similarly crippled and DB2
would not come up."
Isracard simply couldn't afford
for that to happen. Unlike the
other bank, which could continue
to support some of its operations
manually at its branches, Isracard
had no such luxury. If its systems
went down, operations would
come to a screeching halt.
That's when Shorkend, with
management's approval, began
looking for ways to verify that
Isracard's off-site DR solution
wouldn't bring the company
down if a software or database
corruption were to be inadvertently
introduced to its primary site and
then get replicated to the backup,
which would make both copies
useless. To that end, the company
took a unique approach, creating
daily snapshots of its production
system using FlashCopy SE.
