of most applications. This performance scalability makes it an ideal
technology for storage consolidation, multiple applications within
an image, applications running
across multiple virtual machines
in a server, or multiple servers.
Could your data center benefit
from a reduced storage footprint,
lower energy and cooling costs,
and increased storage performance? Considering the I/O
density, capacity (up to 40 TB
RAID5), and energy and footprint
savings, FlashSystem technology
delivers amazing efficiency in a 2U
form factor. It's an ideal solution
to combat data center sprawl-
reducing energy consumption and
cooling costs as well as increasing
storage performance capability.

Response Time and
IOPS Are Important
Advertising for flash products
emphasizes either IOPS or
response time. While a case can be
made for the value of either metric,
they are tightly related. Response
time represents how long it takes
to process an I/O. The faster I/O
gets processed, the more work

gets done. IOPS is a measure of
the throughput achieved by the
system, or its throughput capacity.
Queuing theory says that the
number of items in the queue (Q)
divided by the average time per
item (t) results in the throughput
of the system (Q/t = throughput).
For example, a queue depth of 20
with a response time of 5 milliseconds = 4,000 IOPS. If we assume
the system's capability to submit
work to the storage is a fixed rate,
then the most important variable
is response time. In the example,
if the queue remained constant
but the response time decreased to
100 microseconds, then throughput increases correspondingly to
200,000 IOPS.
Assuming the system spends a
significant amount of time processing I/O, the biggest impact to
application performance will be
made by lowering I/O response
time. FlashSystem technology
with MicroLatency capabilities
is designed to deliver industry-leading response time. When
a process waits less time for data,
process performance can reach
levels faster than with manual

IOPS capability is still important. While most applications
won't exhaust FlashSystem
throughput scalability, it's good
to know the performance is there
in case of increased demand,
or for supporting consolidation
through virtualization or storage
centralization.

All Metrics Are Not
Created Equal
Manufacturers tend to highlight
the boundary capabilities of their
products, which is good as long
as you understand what it means.
The response time numbers you'll
typically see for flash products
are for a single I/O operation or a
queue depth of one. Most realworld deployments will run with
queue depth somewhere between
five and 20. Why focus on a queue
depth of one? The best-case
response time will be observed
with a single I/O operation. Queue
depths higher than one build on
that fundamental capability. As

5 Questions Can Determine the Benefits of FlashSystem
for Your Application/Deployment
IBM FlashSystem* technology can deliver huge benefits for organizations. Answering these five questions
can help you decide if it's a good fit for your environment:
1. Is the application experiencing significant I/O wait time
or are costly mitigations (such as short-stroking hard disk
drives) necessary to overcome performance issues?
2. Does the application have stringent response time
requirements? Response-time sensitive applications
can exploit FlashSystem technology's MicroLatency*
capabilities.
3. What is the proportion of random versus sequential I/O? Random I/O creates bigger challenges for
disk-based systems but these challenges are easily
addressed with FlashSystem.

4. Considering your application, how many threads
are performing I/O? The higher the better to exploit
MicroLatency technology and the extreme throughput
scalability of FlashSystem.
5. Is the application tied to revenue or does the application serve many internal clients where user time is a
premium? In these cases, for storage capacity larger
than DRAM, IBM FlashSystem technology can be a
disruptive competitive advantage.
