ILLUSTRATION BY AKINDO R&D The AHA! House Science and serendipity meet at the IBM Accelerated Discovery Lab cientists, artists and entrepreneurs frequently don't know when a bright idea might hit. It could be in the middle of the night, in the shower or over a breakfast of eggs and bacon. And the serendipity often involved is part of the beauty of discovery. S Jim Utsler is a senior writer for IBM Systems Magazine and has been covering technology for more than 20 years. It also helps when groups work in concert with others. This speeds up the discovery process, with many minds working to solve a particular problem using toolsets they might not have previously considered. And that's essentially the idea behind IBM's Accelerated Discovery Lab in San Jose, Calif. It brings clients and researchers together to tackle problems 22 // MAY/JUNE 2014 that seem intractable-and accomplish them more quickly than they could have on their own. As Laura Haas, IBM Fellow and director of the Accelerated Discovery Lab, explains, good ideas can come from anywhere. Q: What's the focus of the lab? A: Our focus is really on helping people get actionable insight out of big data using analytics that will impact their businesses or their lives. We're talking about big data analytics and this notion of accelerating discovery. We're finding that cognitive or collaborative technologies are also very key to what we need to do here, so it's more than just about a big data or analytic fact. It's actually thinking about the future of how you can help somebody design their analytics
