ensemble data network (IEDN),
while TOR and L2 connections
were not supported. "External"
refers to connectivity beyond the
zEnterprise ensemble.
Perhaps the most important
reason for this was security
and network isolation. The L3
requirement served to isolate the
zBX IEDN from the rest of the
corporate network, preventing
L2 routing loops and broadcast
storms. It also provided a clear
line of delineation of the network
from both administrative and
operational perspectives.
A few customers ignored the
L3 requirement, introducing
problems in their production
network. For example, one
asked why its L2 switches ran at
100 percent after connecting to
the TOR. It was because the client
introduced a routing loop by
implementing an unsupported
configuration.
With the July announcement, IBM extended external
(non-IEDN) zBX network connectivity options to L2 for a
set of specifically documented
configurations. Customer

What Is zBX?
Announced in 2010, the zBX
hybrid computing solution
supports a deployment of:

R x86 blades running
Microsoft* Windows* or Linux*
R POWER* blades running AIX*
R DataPower* blades

while the set of L2 configurations is now supported
with zBX, the original L3 configuration is still the
recommended method.)
When connecting a pair of routers or switches to the
zBX IEDN TOR, as with any other aspect of System z,
it should be configured for high availability. Keep in

requests have led IBM to relax
the requirement for L3 routing
from the external data network
to the IEDN to add this set of
specifically documented L2
connectivity options. (Note that

WEBINAR
Proactive Monitoring of IBM
TS7700 Mainframe Tape
Environments
Automated, daily processing of SMF, BVIR and
Tape Catalog data for greater storage intelligence,
risk reduction, and superior problem solving.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Performance, Capacity, Replication specialists
responsible for mainframe tape.
WHEN

Thursday, January 30 | Noon ET
AGENDA
This technical webinar will cover how to get easy, deep visibility into
common performance and capacity issues for TS7720 and TS7740 Grid and
non-Grid environments.
An overview will be provided of architectures, data sources, data
processing, automated daily health checks and exception reporting using
sophisticated rules-based thresholds, and long term trending. Sample
use cases with both logical workload views as well as views of physical
hardware and links will be demonstrated.
IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS Tape is a new product module built on the
mature and robust IntelliMagic Vision infrastructure and utilizing the years
of experience IntelliMagic has in developing Batch Magic for use by IBM
and IBM business partners.
A special introductory offer for IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS Tape will be
provided to attendees of this webinar.

FEATURING

Dave Heggen
Dave is an IntelliMagic Consultant who has thirty-six years of Data
Processing Experience including 29 years with the IBM Corporation
with 10 of those years spent on the Advanced Technical Skills (ATS)
team for Storage.

Jean-Marc van der Kolk
All are managed by zEnterprise*
Unified Resource Manager
firmware designed to greatly
simplify the deployment and
administration of physical and
virtual resources.

Jean-Marc is a senior member of the IntelliMagic development team
and is the primary architect of the new IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS
Tape product. He also has served more than 10 years as the product
architect for Batch Magic - an IntelliMagic product that is widely
used throughout the world by IBM and IBM business partners for
mainframe tape analysis.
