aware, always on the lookout for

This applies to not only external
threats, but also those arising
from within an organization.
Encryption also plays an
important role in minimizing

ing a transmission, even from
inside an enterprise, gathers
gibberish. Similarly, if someone from within the enterprise
attempts to access critical data
they're not authorized to view,
that attempted access will be
flagged based on privilege levels
using solutions such as RACF*
technology, which was initially
introduced to the mainframe in
1976. Security isn't a new concept in the world of mainframe
servers, and it has become an
even more critical differentiator
as cyber criminals increase both
the sophistication of their efforts
and their level of activity.

MAKE THE
MOST OF YOUR
MONEY
Whereas many
organizations
use x86 boxes
to run Linux,
some of those
systems are
often woefully
underutilized to
the extent of

Another key to security is the
depth to which it is embedded,
existing at several levels of the
stack. This, too, has been built
into the mainframe. "We have
security capabilities that never
allow encryption keys to surface
in an application's observable
memory. They're completely
trusted key implementations that
are locked into the hardware and
firmware," Frey says.
Moving quickly from innovation
to implementation, Flash Express,
a recently released availability and
performance solution available on
the IBM zEnterprise* EC12 (zEC12)
and the IBM zEnterprise BC12
(zBC12), addresses system security
and uptime. It comes configured
as a RAID 10 mirrored pair that
improves reliability in the event
of a component failure, allowing
the hot-swapping of system cards.
However, when a card that carries
encrypted data is pulled out of
its housing, the data is instantaneously cryptographically erased.
 Security is obviously important
for any computing environment,
but less obvious is the importance
of system availability. Without it,
business continuity or resiliency
would suffer to the detriment of
an organization. Parallel Sysplex*
technology addresses that. Developed in the early 1990s, it allows
for dynamic workload routing from
system to system, with no noticeable interruption to everyday operations, including both planned
and unplanned downtime.
Similar synchronous activity
can occur with storage subsystems. As Meyerson explains, "You
can have storage devices running
locally and another set running at
another location, say, 15 kilometers away, and they'll replicate
each other's data instantaneously.
The beauty of this is that if you
lose a major part of your production storage subsystem, the

mainframe can immediately swap
over to the other subsystem as
its primary data source. Because
they're in complete sync, you
maintain both system availability
as well as data integrity."
To help prevent the necessity
of a rollover, zAware, a systemsanalytics tool, constantly monitors
mainframe systems for possible
anomalies beyond the obvious,
such as failed drives or crashed
software. It looks for and calls
out these "sick but not dead"
problems that are the hardest to
diagnose, including application
loops or synchronization issues
with Parallel Sysplex. In a system
as resilient as the mainframe, this is
critical because it enables users to
maintain continuous availability by
predicting and correcting failures
rather than responding to them.

Fundamentally
Transformational
Much of the advanced technology
found on the mainframe has since
been replicated by other platforms.
Virtualization, underlying the
cloudlike nature of the mainframe,
for example, set the stage for
the current definition of cloud
computing. It's now nearly
ubiquitous, with the technology
available across a spectrum
of computing platforms from
mainframes to PCs and Macs.
Meyerson notes that the
outflow of mainframe capabilities
onto other platforms has
gone far beyond security and
virtualization. "If you look at
what's happening in high-value
cloud environments, you now see
attempts to more closely mimic the
physical infrastructure within the
mainframe; one example being
movement toward implementing
high-bandwidth/low-latency
interconnect technologies." The
challenge remains, however,
that the disparate suppliers
