IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe - November/December 2013 - 35

at this from the workload
density perspective-VMs or
applications per core-shows
only the horizontal axis.
In reality, neither view will
suffice, except in the extreme.
When consolidating many small
workloads, density will be a
better fit parameter than ITR
because none of the applications
or VMs will use a significant
amount of the machine's ITR. On
the other hand, if we're talking
about a single application on
dedicated hardware or a very
coarse-grained virtualization
scenario where each application
is of significant size, the ITR
view should dominate. In many
cases, reality is best represented
as a weighted average of the
two or by specification of
both parameters. Specifying a
common metric usually involves
taking the ITR view.
If we specify both parameters
as criteria for selecting a node
upon which to build a solution,
the specification will fall into
one of the regions shown on
Figure 4 (page 34). By specifying
both parameters, we're
designating a point on the plane
of the graph. Machines that
meet the criteria will operate at
or above and to the right of that
specified point.
Specifying both parameters
can force immediate elimination
of all single-node cases.
Likewise, it can allow any
machine to participate, or it can
fall into a region where only
one machine type can meet
the criteria. Also, specifying
both parameters will implicitly
describe a weight for making a
weighted average sizing model
from specifications. This ratio
can be arbitrary; it can be
based on analysis of existing
workloads or on projections of
throughput growth and desired
workload density.

Multidimensional View
When considering relative
capacity, at least two dimensions
of workload size are essential:
throughput and workload
density. Estimators TP and TC
can be gleaned from machine
specifications and related quite
readily to workloads.
Using common metrics
based on standard benchmarks
provides only one dimension
of the workload based on
throughput alone. This is often
inadequate and completely
inappropriate, particularly when
considering modern virtualized

and consolidated environments.
We've seen how key machine
examples are positioned with
regard to both estimators and
what specifying both parameters
will imply about the capability of
machines to meet requirements.
RFPs, therefore, should be
written using these estimators
because they can specify both
dimensions, thus providing
more concrete pointers to
machine types that are fit for
purpose. This will provide a
better foundation for sizing the
hardware required to build a
solution infrastructure.
