they expected to drive more data
growth than any other source
(e.g., social media, mobile,
etc.). When source transactional
systems reside on the mainframe,
the most effective strategy will be
to position predictive analytics
as close to those source systems
as possible by extending the
mainframe infrastructure.

Location, Location,
Location
A data warehouse is necessary
to build and train the models
required for predictive analytics.
Just as it's unwise to locate a
physical warehouse in an unsafe
area simply to save money,
exposing critical data by sending
it outside the mainframe for
processing-under the guise of
lowering costs-is an equally
poor decision. While mainframe
real estate was a pricy option
for warehousing at one time,
modern offerings, such as the
IBM zEnterprise* Analytics
System 9700/9710, allow data
warehouses to be kept safe,
secure and in close proximity
to source data at a highly
competitive acquisition cost.
Moreover, distributed analytics
systems are rarely as inexpensive
to operate as advertised. The
Forrester study found that 70
percent of executives surveyed
believed separating transactional
and analytic systems increased
their costs, and 60 percent said
sharing data across platforms
is excessively expensive. To
illustrate, an internal IBM study
calculated that the extract,
transform and load (ETL) of
1 TB from a System z10* to
a POWER7* data warehouse
consumed more than 500
System z* MIPS and 21 POWER7
cores daily. This is wasted
capacity. Housing a warehouse
alongside source data on the
mainframe is affordable and

eliminates the expense and risk
of moving data off platform.

Keep it Fresh
and Simple
Injecting predictive analytics into
operational decisions usually
involves an architecture based on
statistical modeling and scoring.
For a score to be accurate, both the
modeler and the scoring engine
need access to the freshest data
possible. The IBM SPSS* Modeler
V15 and DB2* V10 for z/OS* allow
scores to be calculated directly
within the database. In-transaction
scoring is currently unique to the
mainframe, and has already been
integrated into antifraud solutions
for several industries.
Diverging a bit from operational
decision automation, consider that
strategic and tactical decisions still
have to be made-even if they're
not automated. Such decisions are
often informed by insights derived
from highly complex, ad hoc
queries. Since such queries can
bring an operational system to its
knees, they are typically rejected,
held for off-hours processing
or moved to off-platform data
warehouses. Not only does this
inhibit business effectiveness, it
can also introduce significant costs
and planning.
IBM Netezza* appliances
accelerate such queries. But the
IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator
takes Netezza technology a step
further by deeply integrating it
with DB2 for z/OS, providing a
single integrated system for safely
and efficiently processing queries.
It's a simple, cost-effective
way to extend systems built for
operational decision automation
to also support one-off, decisionmaking processes.

Cost of
Moving Data
An internal IBM
study calculated
that the ETL
of 1 TB from
a System z10
to a POWER7
data warehouse
consumed
more than 500
System z MIPS
and 21 POWER7
cores daily

automation of a particular
class of operational decisions-
identifies the systems and data
that are key to these decisions,
and works outward from there.
Many operational decisions are
supported by mainframe systems.
The consolidation of these core
systems with the elements of a
predictive analytics architecture
within the scope of the mainframe
delivers a unified foundation for
turning systems into decision
management systems.
It's certainly possible and
practical to teach the System z
platform how to predict the
future.
