enables a simple exploitation for
applications and middleware that
currently embed zlib to provide
industry-standard compression.

SMF Gains
Systems Management Facility
(SMF) provides the system,
applications and middleware
with a standard method for
writing out accounting, auditing,
monitoring, performance
and application records. A
new option for compressing
SMF data sent to the system
logger enables zEDC Express
compression of SMF data.
Compression reduces the amount
of data written—increasing the
throughput and lowering the
CPU cost of SMF logging. SMF
data is decompressed when
read from the logger to maintain
compatibility with existing
software. Users who want
archival compression of SMF
data can store it on compressed
media, including tape, and

compressed extended-format
sequential data sets after it’s read
from logger.

BSAM and QSAM
Compression
Acceleration
BSAM and QSAM applications
will soon have three ways to store
extended format sequential data:
1. No compression
2. Coprocessor-based
compression
3. zEDC Express compression

The zEDC
Express
adapter
can compress
data at more
than 1 GB per
second while
using roughly 100
times less CPU
than software
implementations
of the same
algorithm.

Each of the three options fills
a niche. Once all processors
have zEDC Express adapters,
compression will enable most
data sets to save space at low
CPU costs. On older processors
without zEDC Express, users can
choose between no compression
or coprocessor-based compression for data sets that might be
accessed by systems without
zEDC Express.

Data sets kept for a long
time and accessed infrequently
are excellent candidates for
coprocessor compression. zEDC
Express acceleration reduces
the cost of compression, so more
data sets can benefit. IBM plans
to provide BSAM and QSAM
zEDC Express exploitation within
the z/OS Data Facility Storage
Management Subsystem (DFSMS)
in Q1 2014. The IBM System z
Batch Network Analyzer tool will
be updated to help find data sets
that are candidates for extended
format sequential zEDC Express
compression.

z/OS Copy and
Backup Utilities
Among other things, DFSMSdss
is used for backups and data
movement between disk volumes.
In Q3 2014 it’s scheduled to
exploit z/OS zEDC compression
when creating backups on disk
to save space. The low CPU usage
and high throughput of zEDC

COMPRESSION at a Glance
THE CHALLENGE:
From the invention of Morse
code in 1838 to the latest
streaming videos, compression
has long been used to reduce
data storage and transmission
costs. The trouble with
compression, however, has been
solving the CPU and latency
cost of creating and accessing
compressed data.

THE SOLUTION:
The System z mainframe comes
standard with a compression
co-processor optimized for
compressing short DB2 data
rows. This compression solution
has long been exploited by the
System z software stack.

WHAT’S NEW: System z servers can now incorporate
zEDC Express adapters optimized for industry-standard
compression of sequential data. Compressing data at more than
1 GB per second while using less than 1 percent of the CPU of
existing software compression techniques, zEDC Express eases
storing, transferring and archiving sequential data.
