IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe edition recently sat down with Pat Toole, IBM general manager for System z, to talk about this announcement and the future of System z. T ISM: Why is this announcement important? PT: What we’re seeing in the market is a new wave of computing; we call this Smarter Computing*. Think about the convergence happening between clients running their infrastructure in a cloud, the increasing competitive need for data analytics, and the speed and growth of mobile. As a result, IT environments continue NEW PLATFORM EXTENDS ENTERPRISECLASS TECHNOLOGIES TO CLIENTS OF ALL SIZES, SYSTEM z GM PAT TOOLE SAYS to shift from stable to unpredictable workloads and from a static infrastructure to more of a private cloudenabled set of services. zEnterprise solutions are built to help organizations embrace IT and these shifting markets to create advantage and opportunity. For businesses, it’s about building new services, mitigating risk, reaching new customers and differentiating themselves from the competition. We continue to build on System z innovations to help organizations strengthen the customer experience for business advantage. The July 23 launch spans the breadth of the System z—high-end system enhancements, operating system releases for z/OS* and z/VM*, new industry solutions and capabilities supporting cloud, analytics, mobile and security. 28 // SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 I’m very excited to announce the newest member of the zEnterprise platform—the zBC12. All of the innovations and technologies found in the zEC12 are now available to a broader audience. We continue to build out the unique hybrid computing capabilities around the entire System z family with improvements to the zEnterprise BladeCenter* Extension [zBX], and analytics with the IBM DB2* Analytics Accelerator. Our focus is on supporting and managing diverse workloads around all of that.
