Library using IBM Tivoli* Storage
Manager to protect data across
all applications. The company
also uses IBM Power Systems*
and IBM System x* servers, as
well as an IBM Flex System*, in
support capacities. ARBURG’s
software environment is similarly
beefy, including a bevy of SAP
applications, as well as IBM
customer- and partner-facing
software and back-end solutions.
This highly integrated and
scalable environment, which
Dümmler says, “could only have
been created thanks to my IT
team and, in terms of processes,
with our good relationship and
collaboration with our business
lines,” was developed with several
goals in mind. One was to create
a single point of data access.
According to Dümmler, almost
every ARBURG employee is using
the SAP environment, located
solely in Lossburg, including
workers at its subsidiaries in
Europe, the U.S. or elsewhere.
Notably, this remote processing
takes place over the Internet, in a
cloudlike environment.
This allows for another
of ARBURG’s goals. “One of
our philosophies is to have
applications look alike across
our user base—or having data
available at the right time in the
right place,” Dümmler says. “This
allows both our internal users,
customers and business partners
to access our systems no matter
where they are and independent
of which device they’re using. So
they could be sitting in an Internet
café somewhere using a tablet of
some sort and tying directly into
our systems.”
Of course, this leads to yet a
larger—and ultimately primary—
goal: remaining competitive.

CUSTOMER: ARBURG GmbH + Co KG
HEADQUARTERS: Lossburg, Germany
Manufacturer of injection-molding
machines, robotic systems and customer- and
sector-specific turnkey solutions

BUSINESS:

CHALLENGE: Improving information access
Using IBM mainframe and
SAP software technology to create a smarter
computing, information-rich environment

SOLUTION:

One of ARBURG’s mantras, according to Dümmler,
is “production efficiency.” In order to live up to that
mantra, the company must ensure its products are
available at a minimum cost while retaining optimal
quality. ARBURG encourages this—using SAP tools as
well as IBM Connections and WebSphere* Application
Server—by having everyone on the same system at the
same time and collaborating within that space, whether
engineers or customers contributing design plans.
“We want everyone offering ways in which we can
drive our production efficiency. This is beneficial to not
only us, but more importantly, to our customer base.
They plan the products and we provide them with the
best, most cost-effective solutions possible,” Dümmler
remarks. “The best and really only way to do this is
through close collaboration, which our integrated,
cloud-based systems more than ably allow.”

Open to the Future
This transition—a term Dümmler prefers over
“migration”—to a true smarter computing environment
didn’t happen overnight, nor was it a decision that was
easily made. In fact, the company had homegrown
applications running on the mainframe that were
handling many of its demanding day-to-day operations.
These applications were becoming challenging to
maintain, especially as ARBURG began looking at
the future and tying all of its many users together.
As Dümmler explains, “It was difficult to implement
new functionality easily. For example, it was difficult
to develop and maintain interfaces between the

applications. And we couldn’t
integrate mobility as seamlessly
as we would have liked, which
was necessary, given our goal to
get relevant information to the
right place at the right time.”
Additionally, issues arose
related to the ongoing costs
of maintaining these systems.
Modifying business processes,
for instance, required COBOL
programming knowledge.
Although a few staff members
could handle that, it was a
time-consuming and expensive
endeavor to add new functionality,
even something as simple as
adding Web access.
“I can’t read the future,”
Dümmler says, “but I want to
be open to it. So if you just keep
maintaining your same old
programs, the same old processes,
and can’t develop as rapidly as
you’d like, the future might be
unattainable. That’s why we had
to make the change we did. We
wanted to do more with less on a
very stable platform.”
That desire, in part, drove the
company to decide against an
