The truth, however, is far from that. Indeed, true smarter computing, defined not just in terms of software and hardware, has practical applications that many organizations are using to increase competitive advantage. In fact, it’s more about how businesses can and should take advantage of one of their most vital assets—data. “For us, smarter computing means having the right information at the right time and place,” notes Andreas Dümmler, director of information systems for ARBURG GmbH + Co KG. “In large part, at least in our case, that means running in a cloud environment so we can collaborate on a broad level, across the entire enterprise.” An IBM customer for more than 40 years, ARBURG has witnessed the evolution of information-enabling technologies. Now, it’s implemented a farreaching and comprehensive SAP deployment running within an IBM zEnterprise* 114 (z114) and IBM System Storage* environment— 24 // SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 enabling it to share data with both employees and customers in seemingly no time, regardless of location. Living Up to a Mantra Location matters in ARBURG’s case. Headquartered in Lossburg, Germany, the company has 32 locations in 24 countries and trading partners in more than 50 nations.
